Alien is back in the theater and my son and I saw it last night. Such an awesome experience!

    • I’ve never seen this! Going to look for a showing on 35mmnb
    • when I rewatched this a couple years ago I felt like knowing what the monster was already took a lot out of the movie.sarahfailin
    • Hold up a minute.. you've never seen Alien?! I'm so jealous. The opening scene is one of the best things ever put to film.garbage
    • Yeah nevernb
    • Haven’t seen any of themnb
    • Good series.monospaced
    • Hell yeah. I'm off on Friday, it's also back in some cinemas down under too, which is nice. 1, 2 then nah for me.MrT
    • After 2, it's all downhill. 3 could have been good, but they didn't really know what the hell to do next. One of the scripts had Ripley as the only survivorgarbage
    • She crash lands on a wooden planet made by cultist Luddite monks that believe the xenos are the embodiment of Satan. There are xeno-sheep.garbage
    • The biggest miss though: William Fucking Gibson wrote a script for 3, and those idiots turned it down.garbage
    • Well TIL learned that about Gibson and #3. Terrible decision!MrT
    • You can find the script online, and there have been comic and novel versions of it.garbage
    • Ripley arrives on a rogue moon called Anchorpoint, and it's populated by actual space commies that are embroiled in a cold war. In space. Written by Gibson.garbage
    • I'm excited about Alien: Romulus coming out later this year. It'll most likely suck.pseud

I finally watched this 2004 film last night and now believe the hype as it really is one of the best music docs I think I've ever seen. I'm no a fan of either band though I have seen The Dandy Warhols live a couple of times but I wasn't expecting to be quite so moved despite the awful behaviour of both bands at times, but it really is a great watch!

    • One of the best music docs ever. I barely knew either of these bands when I saw this (in the theatre) and I still loved itnb
    • What’s really cool about it is how much footage they have over the years. Too many docs are just talking headsnb
    • Great film. Anytime i hear anyone is a fan of the Dandy Warhols i know they haven't seen Dig, when someone is a BJM fan you know they have...kingsteven
    • there is a DIG! XX coming soon too with 40 mins extra footageGardener
    • Its a shame that people know BJM for Anton's surrealist drama (and the fans lap it up like a soap opera). They have several incredible albums.kingsteven
    • I met Courtney Taylor before a Radiohead concert in 2001 and sat a talked to him for a bit. My gf asked him "Don't you think RH is the best band in the world".fooler
    • He replied No,The Brian Jonestown Massacre is. I had only listened to Strung Out in Heaven at the time but said I loved that and practically the song "Jennifer"fooler
    • My girlfriends name. A few years later I interview the director for a website I was working for. I only remember her saying it started out as a doc about the SFfooler
    • Music scene and involved a lot more bands but she ended up focusing on BJM and the Dandys for obvious reasons.fooler
    • Radiohead is the best band in the world thoughnb
    • Yeah, At the time they were.fooler
    • Or maybe Bachman Turner Overdrivenb

    CIVIL WAR

It looks beautiful, like Magnum photos and I guess that’s the point. There are so many notable shots, camera moves, framing and compositions it’s worth watching for those alone. The soundtrack is unexpected in its attempts to sooth, like a smile from the executioner as your blindfold is put on. The sounds of war, the bullets, the explosions, the shouts and screams do some impressive heavy lifting, making a sonic soundscape that adds drama, texture and depth few films can match.

Civil War dances a precarious line between narrative progression and identifying political perspectives. The ambiguity has fucked off some viewers but I think that’s part of its success. It forces you to comprehend what war means for a country and its people without the ‘booyah’ that so often justifies inhuman behaviour in the name of a chosen cause.

By Alex Garlands own admission it takes influence from Apocalypse Now and that’s evident in its pacing and the way the acts progress. Like Apocalypse Now it’s a Road(River) Movie that happens to be set in the arena of war. It’s not about sides. It’s more about how individuals choose to act when faced with extreme circumstances that they’d never personally experience except through the monotonous spewing of fact-free news and partisan propaganda. What would you do when you discover a high school friend steeling food for his kids from your store? What would you do to ‘get the shot’ and how does the quest for that shot change the outcome because of your involvement. Is that truth?

If you go expecting obvious heroes and villains or Platoon, Glory or Gettysburg you will be disappointed. I could find very little to criticise, the performances are great. Particularly Jesse Plemons, whose just terrifying. I loved it, I think it’s a thought provoking, beautiful film that asks more questions than it answers, and that’s a good thing. Go and see it if you want.

    • I felt the same. But also seeing someone I know in real life murdered was a trip and it stayed with me all weekend. I have issues with the ending thoshellie
    • Do you know one of the actors. Ooo spill, which one? I did have some notes about how the 'ending' of one of the characters at the end could have been better.Morning_star
    • What was your issue?Morning_star
    • Nelson Lee played the guy from Hong Kong. My issue at the end was the role reversal. KD didn't need to go all childlike as she entered the final push inward.shellie
    • But it was overall riveting. I couldn't look away and it's still on my mind. War movies hit different for Americans bc they're never on our turf.shellie
    • There's usually nothing familiar — houses, roads, signage, make it all feel like it can't happen here. I thought painting the picture was interesting exercise.shellie
    • I believe the theme stated was, "You were was about her age when you started. You have to start sometime." which was nebulous enough not to take sides butshellie
    • I would have liked something like -- ending the cycle to start with embracing the truth. As members of the press, they bring the truth to the surface w/facts.shellie
    • But overall, I think the movie serves its purpose to make Americans think -- not about sides but the true price of each side.shellie

I don't know if it has already been suggested, but this argentinian anthology movie is very good, 6 dark comedy cynical stories on how violence is inevitable in our society

That's right. New York. It's 1958. Anyway, for a few more minutes it is. Come midnight, it's gonna be 1959. A whole other feeling. The New Year. The future. Yeah, old Daddy Earth's fixin' to start one more trip round the sun. Everybody hopin' this ride-around be a little more giddy, a little more gay. Yep, all over town, champagne corks is a-poppin'. Over in the Waldorf, the big shots is dancin' to the strains of Guy Lombardo. Down in Times Square, the little folks is a-watchin' and waitin' for that big ball to drop. They're all trying to catch hold of one moment in time, to be able to say, "Right now, this is it, I got it." Of course by then, it'll be past. But they're all happy. Everybody havin' a good time. Well, almost everybody. There's a few lost souls floatin' around out there. Now, if y'all ain't from the city, we got somethin' here called the rat race. Got a way of chewin' folks up so that they don't want no celebratin'. Don't want no cheerin' up, don't care nothin' about no New Years. Out of hope, out of rope, out of time. This here's Norville Barnes. That office he's steppin' out of is the office of the president of Hudsucker Industries. It's his office. How'd he get so high? And why's he feelin' so low? Is he really gonna do it? Is Norville really gonna jelly-up the sidewalk? Well, the future, that's somethin' you can't never tell about.
But the past... That's another story.

This was really interesting/nicely unpredictable/really well shot.
Great first half. Kind of felt a bit short, would've been nice to see a third act. Better than too long tho.
