They showed the video of Kumaritashvili's crash on NBC after the ceremonies and the Bob Costas review. I was waiting for Jimmy Fallon to come on and I noticed they were playing it, more than a couple times. Also a lot of clips of other people wiping out on the course, but none clipping the corner and flying up like he did...

this has probably been said plenty, but would it not suck to be going on that course now? Olympic nerves plus oh by the way, the last guy that went on this died so be careful. No pressure though.
- seriously. do you know if they'll be practicing or racing on the course tomorrow?ismith
- Hopefully the athletes didn't watch see the video, that would fuck you up so much beyond just knowing it happened...ismith
- They changed the course.CygnusZero4

I believe the course has been officially deemed "safe". The accident has been attributed to rider error, rather than dangerous conditions.
- that's fucked up. he struck an exposed steel pillar. even if it were rider error, there should be more safety concern so it doesn't have to happen again.dijitaq

- there easily could have been something to prevent him from flying out of the track.scenek
- At those speeds, its hard to say if anything could help.ETM
- 8ft of plexiglass. he would have bounced back on to the track after a slight ascent. painful but not deadlyismith

Ann Murray as an honorary Canadian flag bearer?

I heard the opening ceremonies were about 17 hours long, and a guy died during them?

I'd like to hear who you think would have been good guests? What would have been acceptable duration of the ceremony? How would you design the cauldron? What performers you would have chosen that could better represent Canada?
As usual, no one has anything nice to say. Only criticisms, as if they themselves would have done better. Too bad.
I for one, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, enjoyed the ceremony. It was pretty cool to watch the lights, theatrics and performers. It was very creative and artistic and I think a good representations of Canada for the world to see. It was really great to see the First Nations strongly represented for once.
I also think it was nice to see the respect shown for the fallen luger. What a terrible tragedy.
Have a nice day

Camer,
Here are my suggestions on how to improve the opening ceremonies:
1) reduce the length by at least 1.5 hours. They are wayyyyy too long. Too much filler. Too much superficial window dressing.
2) Don't butcher the national anthem. You have a stadium of 60,000 people, many of which are Canadians, brimming with patriotism. Stick to a rendition that everyone can sing, and I guarantee that place would explode with pride.
3) Minimize time at the microphone for John Furlong and that bore from the IOC. Neither are engaging public speakers, and they went on and on for wayyyyy too long.
4) Stop trying so fucking hard with all the props and visuals. The cauldron in Calgary was classic, looked much nicer than the thing we had last night and wasn't subject to mechanical malfunction. Instead we had to have fancy hydraulic sticks that can't be relied on.
5) Try and get perfomers to actually sing rather than lip-synch. I know lip synching is de facto at stadium performances these days, but is it really that tough to perform live?
There are my suggestions.

Foiled by Americans again. The Canadian (Jenn Heil) did fine and has won the top spot for years in a row, but played it a bit safe to secure a medal, whereas the American was a little more fancy. And some other women from both teams (and others) fell from going way too fast. I almost can't wait for 2014 because of the competition between Americans and Canadians again.
- I was watching this. Last girl had nothing to lose as far as US being on the podium so she gave it all she had...ismith
- I did feel bad for Heil though. I mean 1st place with one person left, kinda sucks.ismith
- She was 1st to qualify in 2006 so she got to go last. I heard it's actually more pressure to go last though.juhls
- This time, of course, she was second-to-last. It seems like speed is worth more than 25% of the mark, like they claimed.juhls
- ismith, nothing to lose, maybe, but the athletes still want to win the medal for themselves rather than a teammate getting one.juhls
