Man, the one place I thought I was free from the grip of the Internet now has Wi-Fi, at least this Delta flight does.
How common is this these days? First time I've had this. Currently flying over Georgia!

AA has it on several flights, so does Virgin American... that's all I know.

They had Wi-Fi on JAL and some European airlines several years ago, but often it was just trials and taking so long to go mainstream...

Boeing had a business unit dedicated to this 5 years ago, but they closed it down a few years ago due to it not making any money.

This reminds me that the whole "no cell phones" on planes business is utter bullshit. God, I hate the airlines. I wouldn't believe a thing they said. Ever.

coincidentally I am posting from a flight right now. I'm on a Virgin America flight flying form Boston to LA. They even have plugs and usb ports under the seats. Besides walking on the flight and thinking it was the gravitron, Virgin America is pretty sweet.

Yeah, Virgin America is nice. And the employees act like humans, which is a nice touch.

I'll fly Virgin America even if it costs more. Way better than other US domestic airline (probably since they are not a US based company). Even when they delayed me an hour, in flight TV, free internet, and plugs... I was happy. I'm glad this is starting to happen.

Avoid AA, they have the least leg-room, and charge you extra just to have as much leg room as every other airline...
I think most US airlines have edgy staff because they all worry about being randomly let go, and because their schedules are randomly changed all the time, so they may have very little sleep or stability.... I know a pilot who laments how different the industry is from what it was, and how airline management treats people like objects....

International on AA is cool, touch screen LCD's on the backs of every seat. On Demand movies, video poker etc. Flew united for 13 hours in April and all they had was a crappy projector up front with shit movies on it.
- <- um that isn't cool, its just not as incredibly backward as Unitedribit

What went wrong with the US airline industry? (why no true competition?)

I believe AirTran (in the U.S.) offers it on most flights.

I just don't want the airlines to lose my luggage, I am sure that is asking too much.

I don't want them to shout "fish or chicken?!" at me when I'm sleeping. Or read out a long list of connections gates when we could access that stuff on-screen if they'd put the screens in and push data at them. Or dump me out of the plane after 15 hours into US immigration where they demand I fill out forms 'designed' in the 50s, that ask if I've been involved in acts of 'moral turpitude' or if I'm a Nazi, then ask if I'm an alien and shout a lot to direct us places when a few properly designed signs would do the job rather better.
