I was brought on to finish a logo for a client that had exasperated everyone senior to me, including the art director and two senior designers (I wasn't even jr, I was production). Sat there with the client, with illustrator projected on the wall for them to see, gave them my honest feedback on what they had so far and what they were asking for, and finished it off for them.
It looked like shit, but that reflects who they were as a client (they were dropped after this).

upper decker.

I'll explain that a bit...
an agency i used to work at, the CD was this awesome awesome guy...he totally took the time to explain to me everything that was going on....taught me as many tricks about art direction as he could, and never ever minded working with me to make something better....on a few occaisions, he would ask me to send him what i was working on, and the next day i'd stop by his desk to find he'd finished it, changed things, and sent it off to the client....on each occasion, i asked about it, and explained it in detail...whatever the facts were etc...and in each case, it was absolutely teh cool/right thing to do....i never got upset, and was (and still am) in awe about what a decent guy he is, and how fantastic it was to work with him....however...
his partner at the time was this dude, who was a copywriter/half-assed designer (did a lot of quark-stuff for print but that's about it) he was also the main suit-guy...did most of the client relations stuff etc...
there were many, many occasions where he took credit for work that was done by myself....
and more than a few times he would alter work i'd done and pass it along to the client..and it was NEVER better after he'd messed with it....
that guy was super hard to be around for those and other reasons...oddly enough though, aside from that, outside of work he was tres cool to party with. lol....

If it's a credit and kudos thing..then unfortunately, as long as there are CD's and Art Directors over and above you, that will happen....it's a pain....and it sucks to see wind-bags stealing credit for others hard work etc...but that's the way it goes..the shitty end of the stick. You can try and be a hardass and say you don't want someone fucking your logo up...but if he's got pull and you don't, he'll replace your ass....first chance he gets...and possibly discredit you in other ways as well.....it ALL depends on how much of an asshole the guy is...if he's an otherwise decent chap thats just trying to justify his paycheck etc, you can probably reason with him....atleast a bit....but if he's a bit of a dick regardless, i'd just suck it up and work to build the best folio you can, and move on when the chance comes....eventually you'll be in a position where it's either impossible for someone to do this to you, or you'll be in a group where it doesn't happen for other reasons (better group dynamics, better hierarchy etc)...at any rate, it's happened to me at a few places, and when it's for legit reasons, it's all cool and the gang..especially when the CD/ArtDirector whatever, can sit down with you and explain why their doing it....but its totally sucks when it's obvious they just want to steal your thunder...

lots of reasons for this other than stealing credit.
1. you're skills/talent is needed more on another project
2. tricky client need more hand-holding and direct engagement than you can provide.
3. you're close but just not getting it. It's messing up the project and CD is stepping in to try to save it.Don't get too attached, there will be many many other projects.

man, i know it sucks, but this isn't art, my friend.

aye aye captain. It really has no affect on you because he is your boss and when it comes down to it he probably cant do what you do or he would have done it himself. So when the appropriate time comes ask for more money and bring up the logo. "I'm the guy doin his job...YOU MUST BE THE OTHER GUY" - The Departed.
- cannonball19780
The reason is probably because you don't ask why. Happens to pushovers.
- your a fucking idiotsvenreed

One good thing to do is approach your CD after the project has run its course, and ask him about how the logo finished up. Be real professional, and say its for your own understanding and 'growth potential'.
As long as you make sure it doesnt come off as a pride thing, and id bet he will explain to you why he had to take control of it at the last second. Be it client end, or your own shortcomings, it will be a better resolution to the situation to know how it actually went down.
