I need to write a cover letter, but have no contact name. To whom it may concern sound so canned. How formal would you get?

Dear Sir or Madam:
Dear Madam or Sir:If you don't know who it is, I think these are your other choices. They have to be canned so it doesn't look like you're making an assumption.

i tend to put cover letters in e-mails so recruiters have immediate access to them. the alternative is making them open a word doc or pdf file, which they probably don't want to just to read a cover letter. i've been as informal as, "yo, my name is....". depends on the company, if its corporate and stuffy its a requirement to do a lame cover letter.

- for converse, yeah the whole whom you may concern is there...but be free flowing, just give em somthin' differentstudderine

ATTN: Hiring Manager,
Please accept this...
Dear XXX is only suitable if you know a name, and it has to be the RIGHT NAME. Sir/Madame sounds hackish, you might as well say 'dear whoever happens to read this letter'.
By stating Attention XXX department or manager will at least get your email/letter routed to the person making the decisions, and it doesn't leave much room for an insult.

Surely if you're writing a letter, then it's a formal communication by default. Forget any email- or other 'modern'- style salutations as you'll sound like a dick, like some of these ^^^ : )
To whom it may concern is formal, but if you can get more specific with a job title can't you?
Personally I'd go Dear or Attention [title] and keep it gender independent.

I think a simple "Yo," is more than sufficient.
