i tend to put cover letters in e-mails so recruiters have immediate access to them. the alternative is making them open a word doc or pdf file, which they probably don't want to just to read a cover letter. i've been as informal as, "yo, my name is....". depends on the company, if its corporate and stuffy its a requirement to do a lame cover letter.
