i picked one up two weeks ago and i'm more than happy with it. haven't done much video with it i've been so damn busy with work, but i did carry it with me to a halloween party last saturday and was really impressed with the images considering the only light was from a handful of tiki torches. i really can't wait for the ACR update.
here's a link to the photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/the…

so you're all telling me that the $1000 difference is worth not having not full frame for the life of the camera? that's like $3/day for a year. if you're thinking about it, think long term I say.

while i would love a 5D.. the fact i can get a 7D and nice L series lens for the same price as 5D body, its hands down 7D.
would have been nice if it was full frame.. but yep, it wouldnt be as cheap as it is otherwise..
still saving my pennies..

hmm, i can't help get a sense of "toy over tool" here as i believe it should be quite the other way. And, it's closer to 1/3 more than 1/2, but either way... If I'm spending thousands of dollars on pro grade equipment, I better actually be getting "pro grade" i.e. a full frame 35mm equivalent sensor. But that's just me.
- the eos 1D mkIV is most def pro grade and it's not full frame... for the sake of arguing.Chief

Logic MrT? You spent the extra grand on your digital slr to record video. this feature is by no means a solution for production use. the video is a secondary function to the camera's primary function as an SLR.

buy whatever makes you happy. the fact that the 7D has more video features did it for me. and like i said, i'm happy with the purchase. both are great cameras.

So, I want to take photos and make videos, neither of which is my profession nor do I intend them to be. My budget would stretch to a 7D and not a 5D II. This isn't classed as a pro-grade but rather enthusiast/semi-pro, and there's a difference or the market wouldn't be split as such.
I like your provocative approach but, come on, the 7D is not a toy.
This camera is pretty much universally acclaimed so far.Does the DPreview miss the point then?

I'm simply astonished that no one cares about the quality of the source image (the sensor) as long as the final output is "big enough"? seems strange to me people are aware of the crop yet simply disregard it knowing you are missing a large percentage of the image the lens saw as long as the final output generated by Canon is 1080p.
It's everything you want, but not what you deserve as a photographer. This is the camera that everyone who picked up someone else's DSLR 3 years ago thought they were picking up
- i'd take the 7d's1.6 crop over a 1.6 teleconverter (if there were such a thing) on the 5dmkii for wildlife .jaylarson

MrT is right...if I were a professional photographer / videographer then certainly I would go with the 5D, however I am not so this is a very good option and thats who it is aimed at. Of course Id love fullframe but Ill have to wait 5 more years for it to be affordable - at least in my book.

hmm, wow, thanks for the opinions/insight/honesty guys.
*looks at 5D MKI in bag & wonders if it needs a friend, not replaced

No, she's fine, instead get the 7D and send it my way. Christmas is coming...

Ah, so you're already on a higher path version3.

osfa, i am only upset about the mkII release date in regards to the purchase of my mkI, i could've saved the money over those few months and just bought the mkII instead, but no, the value of my mkI just dropped a grand was all :/
full frame for life

stop it with this full sensor babble. go get a medium format camera if you fancy big plates
- Tungsten0
I'm waiting for digital camera sensors to reach the size of a dinner plate (at least) before I spend any money on one. Anything less is simply inferior imho :)
- im beyond sensor. im waiting for whatever comes next. as long as its hugeerikjonsson
