Good typography - like good use of punctuation - is invisible.
While the majority of readers might not even notice it, good typography aids the reader's comprehension, and adds polish. I reckon the one factor that sets 'high-style' brands apart from the rest, is attention to detail.

... actually - part of me thinks that the current slew of shitty brand decisions made by companies like Pepsi - might be a conscious decision to compete with the brand perception in 'lower' market segments. Sometimes appearing posh (by utilising good design) might work against a products ultimate aim of shifting units?

If you think good design is imperative for success go see craigslist, ebay, or even google.

this would be a good example of putting my own interests as a designer first... even if I knew a "down market" solution would be better for a client's bottom line, I wouldn't pursue it

it's just about knowing who you're speaking to, in some cases you're just doing it for the lulz, where the target isn't overly scrutinising the formalness of the product [like when my mom does her grocery shopping] but then there is a whole world of products and services where these things do matter [of course to a degree, nothing irks me more than a designer trying to engage me in helping them to decide between 3 nearly identical typefaces just with slightly different x heights]

it's not about what you/us/them wants. it what the brand needs. ikea made their typographic decision based on utility. print catalogs are expensive/wasteful to produce. if the eschew it based on an all digital catalog, what type of constraints are there going to be? they saw that a big part of their visual identity, the futura typeface, was lost online, and made the call to switch to verdana. is this shortsighted? probably. is it functional? totally.
- yep, and brand is a device - not an aesthetic scheme********
- I think there are lots of examples of functionality trumping design...harmony between the two is of course the best though.designbot
- ...but functionality wins.designbot
- functionality can be subjectiveidentity
- functionality is a result of design.johndiggity
- nope the two are very separate but dependent on one another. I am speaking with my own experience (web)designbot
- ..... aesthetic design vs. UIdesignbot
- i am speaking of design as process, not aesthetics.johndiggity
- ahh, I got ya :)designbot

This study focuses on the positioning of a Western brand (McDonald's) in an Eastern European market (Slovenia), and shows how corporate communication efforts can influence consumer perceptions of brand essence. In order to ensure the long-time viability of a brand's equity, preserving and reinforcing its essence is of primordial importance. A method is presented for identifying those characteristics of the personality of a corporate brand that make up its essence. Such a tool is suitable for refined corporate positioning, because it not only shows which corporate characteristics form the essence of the corporate brand, but also shows why they are so essential.Journal of Brand Management (2006) 14, 114-124. doi:10.1057/palgrave.bm.2550056

I'm thinking about using Gill Sans for the logo of a Dog-Pound... Thoughts?

they're not going to be able to say "hey that's verdana", but in their feeble reptilian brains they're going to get an overall impression, and that impression is closer in line with how ikea wants to be seen.
not a huge change, granted, but who said it was
- ********0
we did it for the lulz
- DrBombay0
I can't believe you started a new thread about a comment I made. I liked the Ikea catalogs the way they were. Futura looked better, but .01% of the consumers are going to realize it even changed was the point.
