look at Western Digital VelociRaptor (not SSD)

Sounds good shitehawk, getting a macbook pro soon & seriously thinking of 13" with SSD. Just use my external pocket hardrives as backup.
Did you partition the SSD drive for a scratch disk when using Photoshop?
- dibec0
It helps ... but look at bench marks for read/write speeds. I don't think the technology is there yet. For the amount that you pay, the space you get, and speeds, I frankly don't find them cost effective.
If you got money to blow ... go for it.

Mirrorball, just got a new macbook pro and after consideration I opted for the smaller 120gig SSD instead of a regular SATA HD. Its fast, especially coming from using an older g4 powerbook. Starts up quick (about 15 seconds), programmes load fast and the os seems very responsive. Only loaded stuff onto it this week, so not a huge time to test it out yet but at first paces I would very much recommend it.

whats SNOW LEOPARD like on a SSD?

Currently installing Win7 on my SSD - slightly perverse seeing the optical drive keep the experience firmly rooted in the slow world of spinning masses!
I'll update later on sometime if it's all giddily quick. If I stay silent on the subject, you can be sure I'm sitting here swearing my head off.

Just finished swapping out an Intel 80GB SSD with a 256 GB Samsung in my dv7 laptop - xfer was easy and painless - boot times still reasonable, load/read/write excellent for CS4, et al. Of course having 8 GB of RAM helps. =]

Is it much faster, DETRITUS? I'm considering putting 2 X 256GB SSDs in RAID0. Would I be better off buying 4X 64GB drives instead? I'm a bit confused by the link moveinspace posted, other than I understand the disc space for a swap disc doesn\'t have to be that big since it'll all be erased anyway. And my geek friends tell me more than 2 in RAID0 would be useless.
- detritus0
Jesus, moveinspace - that would be a nice thing to play with!
Though I'm not sure I believe his opinion about the 'effective millions of rewrites' so would question using SSD for swap drives. I'd hate to fork out for 4 SSDs, then belatedly realise Photoshop rewrites to scratch with every pixel change! (though I'd doubt it would)
As I understand it, one useful side effect of the parallel manner in which SSDs read memory blocks is that, the larger a drive you buy, the quicker it goes. The negative side of this, along with all computer components these days, is that there's no ceiling to spend. This shit costs a fortune :\
- yeah gotta spend for these things. I also am interested in how it works out like Dr. Bombay.moveinspace
- Keep us in the loop especially if you find some lower prices. I also am looking around for an SSD.moveinspace

Way I look at it is - a half decent, small boot drive is only like 30% cheaper than an SSD, *if* you ignore the size difference (I know that's warped, but I'm thinking purely in terms of productive efficiency, not economy).
So fuckit, after a couple of hours of trawling immensely arcane hardware reviews and recommendations from some of the geekier corners of the net - I've decided it's worth it.
The 12gb RAM and i7 I want to throw in to the mix should make this a gloriously enjoyable upgrade from my aging P4 :)

all of the second gen intel SSDs were recalled.
- You gotta link for that? The one I linked only appears to have been released this week?detritus

Thanks for the heads'updetritus

ISO50 wrote a pretty informative article about using an SSD as a swap file drive. Some info in there might help you with your decision. http://blog.iso50.com/2009/03/11…

You can carry on repeating yourself and I'm going to carry on ignoring you, 'InternetGod' - your opinion is not relevant to the thread query and I'd never dream of loading everything up on the primary disk anyway - that's just stupid.

not worth the price... period.
1TB Samsung SpinPoint

If anyone else is 'interested', there is a gargantuan, labyrinthine article on the subject of SSDs here: http://www.anandtech.com/printar…
I feel like a fucking expert on the matter now!

designbot - I assume you're talking about the 'average transfer of small (4kb) , randomly-located files'? This is a BIG issue with many drives, but not the Intel one I linked above.
Also, I know about the 100k write/rewrite limitation, and I don't mind.

SSD from what I heard ain't great...
I'd go with a 1TB Samsung SpinPoint "not noisy and great price"
1Tb vs 80gb

Do not use an SSD as your boot drive. They are very fast for handling certain types of data, but you don't want your OS on one. If I had more time I would list some of the info, but just google them to find out more.
Windows currently also has issues with them. Which is yet another reason they are good for a secondary drive, but not a primary.
- btw, go with the OCZ models if you are going to buy one.designbot
