solid sate boot? why? seems to be pricey. now for secondary/ slave drive .. even then pricey.. i picked up a 1tb drive for 200.. and it works wonders for video.

Actually, scratch that - Intel's new model, released this month in UK, is £184. Still, though!

Currently installing Win7 on my SSD - slightly perverse seeing the optical drive keep the experience firmly rooted in the slow world of spinning masses!
I'll update later on sometime if it's all giddily quick. If I stay silent on the subject, you can be sure I'm sitting here swearing my head off.

whats SNOW LEOPARD like on a SSD?
- shitehawke0
Mirrorball, just got a new macbook pro and after consideration I opted for the smaller 120gig SSD instead of a regular SATA HD. Its fast, especially coming from using an older g4 powerbook. Starts up quick (about 15 seconds), programmes load fast and the os seems very responsive. Only loaded stuff onto it this week, so not a huge time to test it out yet but at first paces I would very much recommend it.

Sounds good shitehawk, getting a macbook pro soon & seriously thinking of 13" with SSD. Just use my external pocket hardrives as backup.
Did you partition the SSD drive for a scratch disk when using Photoshop?

It helps ... but look at bench marks for read/write speeds. I don't think the technology is there yet. For the amount that you pay, the space you get, and speeds, I frankly don't find them cost effective.
If you got money to blow ... go for it.

Is it much faster, DETRITUS? I'm considering putting 2 X 256GB SSDs in RAID0. Would I be better off buying 4X 64GB drives instead? I'm a bit confused by the link moveinspace posted, other than I understand the disc space for a swap disc doesn\'t have to be that big since it'll all be erased anyway. And my geek friends tell me more than 2 in RAID0 would be useless.

Just finished swapping out an Intel 80GB SSD with a 256 GB Samsung in my dv7 laptop - xfer was easy and painless - boot times still reasonable, load/read/write excellent for CS4, et al. Of course having 8 GB of RAM helps. =]

look at Western Digital VelociRaptor (not SSD)

SSD is the future.

Do not use an SSD as your boot drive. They are very fast for handling certain types of data, but you don't want your OS on one. If I had more time I would list some of the info, but just google them to find out more.
Windows currently also has issues with them. Which is yet another reason they are good for a secondary drive, but not a primary.
- btw, go with the OCZ models if you are going to buy one.designbot

SSD from what I heard ain't great...
I'd go with a 1TB Samsung SpinPoint "not noisy and great price"
1Tb vs 80gb

designbot - I assume you're talking about the 'average transfer of small (4kb) , randomly-located files'? This is a BIG issue with many drives, but not the Intel one I linked above.
Also, I know about the 100k write/rewrite limitation, and I don't mind.

If anyone else is 'interested', there is a gargantuan, labyrinthine article on the subject of SSDs here: http://www.anandtech.com/printar…
I feel like a fucking expert on the matter now!

not worth the price... period.
1TB Samsung SpinPoint

You can carry on repeating yourself and I'm going to carry on ignoring you, 'InternetGod' - your opinion is not relevant to the thread query and I'd never dream of loading everything up on the primary disk anyway - that's just stupid.

ISO50 wrote a pretty informative article about using an SSD as a swap file drive. Some info in there might help you with your decision. http://blog.iso50.com/2009/03/11…
