what type of design company are you interviewing at?

Always dress better for the interview than how you would dress day-to-day, at your job. No jeans.

It's really simple - no jeans and nO sneakers.

I don't give a shit what you wear - you plop a portfolio down on my desk that makes my dick shrink and you could be wearing a fucking clown suit for all I care.

- wow, I would love to have a portfolio that makes people's dicks shrinkRand

there seems to be very little consensus on this issue...

I think if your in design, you have to dress a bit trendier than people who are in finance or management. Otherwise if you come in with the same suit look, what does that say about you or more importantly your designs. But most ppl are saying no jeans or sneakers, everything else is pretty much up to you.

just get dressed as you would anyway
dont dress up
dont dress downyou ARE going to have to keep roughly the same standard throughout your working days. if you're not confortable working for the forseeable future in the same type of clothes you wear in the interview - then dont wear them.

Has there ever been a thread where everyone universally agrees on something?
- Didn't think so.Jnr_Madison
- I have to say we agree that this guy is douchey. http://www.qbn.com/t…kgvs72

Keep in mind that this is a question about the INTERVIEW. Not how you'd end up dressing everyday.
I think you need to stand out by looking professional.
- it sets the standard thoughgentleman
- Most interviewers should know that you may not be dressing like that every day. The interview is more about firstjuhls
- impressions. Once you get a feel for what everyone else in the company wears, you can start downgrading or upgrading.juhls
- It would be great if people could just "be themselves", but it's not realistic. Then again, I haven't worked in a design studio.juhls
- it is about first impressions! in my opinion when people come in it's interesting to see the quality of dress up VS work ratiogentleman
- weirdly enough its the people that came in dressed casually - the ones with better work (generalisation alert!)gentleman
- the others are on par with people who buy really expensive portfolios for substandard work.gentleman
- I prefer the middle ground. If you dress sloppily (with lose clothes), it doesn't leave a good impression.juhls

-> black roll neck sweater
-> black slim fitting trousers
-> 'i'm a designer' acrylic spectacles^ but what would you put on your feet to complete the look?

To me, in reality it doesn't matter, just keep it clean and try not to stand out or be too loud. I disagree 100% with the no jeans no sneakers policy.
The only thing it really matters if you are interviewing for a design position, is your portfolio.
Now, if you have doubts about you work and you think you might not have what it takes, go ahead wear a suit and some cologne, who knows? it might help.

I have to disagree with Meeklo. The portfolio is only half of what an employer considers. If it's the only they look at, the company is a sweatshop of a design studio.
Your initial impression influences the employer's perception of you. And that's the other half of the equation they consider.
