attentionspan,
Unless you have a very good reason to then you shouldn't do it. Here's why.
Typefaces are made with certain proportions, stroke and line weight and density. When you stretch a font vertically/horizontally you throw all of those things out of whack. Aside from essentially defiling a typeface that a designer worked hard to create and to make legible and more than likely with a very specific and intended use it's just bad practice. It looks like you just made Clip Art.

OK SO... its really funny that everyone here is claiming to be font experts... trying to tell me that i should not be stretching fonts....
I AM USING GOTHAM NARROW and GOTHAM REG
- I didn't tell you that at all.d_rek
- say it on your knees!!!********

I just think it's confusing to have the letter "J" complete the word "Jay" but not be a part of the word "Chiat," yet it's positioned to hold the same relationship.
Jay
JChiatI think you got your answer dude- just hunker down and come up with some new chiat ;-)
- I did see that connection... its someones name though... so i can't do that********

guys,
i think he's using stretched fonts.

ESPtype,
That's really great. Just try to use them with a little more finesse?
Maybe try lighter versions of the condensed so that it actually looks as if it's supposed to be communicating something as opposed to trying to match the weights up. Mix it up. Try a few other things. I'm sure in the 10 minutes it took you to 'sketch' this up you can bust out 20 more in another hour or so.

I blame mau, that hack.

I saw in your flickr site that you freelanced for Giovanni Bianco?
what the hell did you do there?

So i am getting the idea that using gotham narrow and gotham regular is not a good idea
- cause people think i am stretching the font...********
- instead of asking us what you should do maybe you could just "do" what you should do?d_rek
- i dont work with other designers... its nice to have input once and awhile********
- yeah, nothing wrong with getting some opinions.Jnr_Madison
- Fair enough. I offer an apology.d_rek

is this the guy?i would try using something classic/serif
- ukit0
It just doesn't read too well with the closely stacked type. And as someone else said 2009 is in the wrong place.
"I am trying to keep it clean... so I made most of the words transparent, I was thinking that it would be 100% on a rollover"
That seems like a weird solution. If the J is going to act as a mark, just let it stand on its own without alpha'ing out the rest.

buahaha, I guess Hoefler just typed some Gotham in Illustrator, narrowed it and said: dear type experts, I proudly present the new Gothams!
Ok, but the reason why your logo looks crappy is
a) The J. There no reason why it should be so big. And if it doesn't relate to every word, it really shoud -not-
b) you don't like Gotham's numbers? That's ok, but choose a font that is either something completely different (serif?) or matches the proportions and weight of the rest. Or matches the proportions and contrasts the weight (ultra light or something)
c) colour. you now have 4 colours in your logo: the J is VERY black, the ay chiat is just black, the awards is grey and 2009 is light grey. I know you only have 2, but optically...
d) the sizes. 2009 is optically smaller than the AY by the way. the fact that AWARDS is much smaller than AY CHIAT is irritating (and leading many to the assumtion that you stretch type.Bottom line: start again.
