concepting takes time
even brainstorming can take hoursWhat's up with this trend of clients dictating how much time a project will take? $250 is 5 hours of work, and results in about 3 rough concepts. Finished logo direction would take another 5 hours and another $250.

if you don't have the time, raise the price to make it worth your time. if you're too busy, you're too cheap.

OK I think I decided to say no. Thanks guys.

Ask him if he would do 8 hours of consulting work for $250.

Whenever I'm presented with a situation like this I always try to put it into their terms that they can understand.
For instance: I had an older guy contact me about re-designing his companies website. They install the metal superstructures in tollways and whatnot. He called last Wednesday and wanted his site up by the 1st. I was just kind of shooting the shit with him saying "no way really, you guys put up the tollway stuff? what goes into that process?" and he explained everything out in detail for a process that could take months. So I asked would he take a job that needed a 2 week turnaround for a process that he knew takes months and he said no. Then I said "WELCOME TO MY WORLD MOTHERFUCKER" and hung up.
- you called a potential client a motherfucker? I don't believe you.monospaced
- yup. Plus he wanted to pay me $500 for a 50 page site and he caught me in a bad mood. I don't need that.sigg
- LOL +1
Nothing wrong with being upfront, some people respect that!Sandman_1982

- depending on how much time you're spending on research/concepts/id... generation -bulletfactory

- +1 again. Sell them a brandbook not just a logo, put some thought into it. $3k is within reason easily.meffid

To be honest I base my prices on:
a) Do I like the project?
If yes, I'll be willing to drop my price, if not I will charge a bit over what I would normally expect to get paid, if I want to scare them out, I will ask for 2 grand.b) How is my workflow at the moment?
If I'm super busy my time is going to be worth more, if I have no other jobs, there is now way around it, my prices are too high. It has nothing to do with talent or experience in my opinion. Is that wrong?
- not sure sounds logical. Right now I am busy and don't have much time I did want to help a friend but I want to create a good logo also and for 250 I dont think i canredant
- good logo also and for 250 i dont think i canredant
- is that snooty?redant
- no, normal.Jnr_Madison

Don't do it. ;)
- version30
i think everyone agrees, a lowered rate is more understandable if the client is allowing you freedom as a designer/developer/artist, but no one wants (to be) art directed by the client for weeks on end without (some sort of, usually financial) compensation
- and such sentiment needs conveyed to the client as well, see sigg's comment aboveversion3

i got it! hold on
