On a related note, my freelance rates are based on $70/hour or $550/day for design work. I've had two potential clients in two weeks tell me that's too rich for their blood. I've thought for some time that what I charge is very reasonable, considering what people get out of the bargain and the fact of my 6 yrs. experience.
I think I'd rather get a part-time job waiting tables or something than dumb my fees down to oblige the bottom-feeders.
- but see.. experience has nothing to do with the price negotiation.Meeklo
- Sure it does, being experienced in negotiation, that is. I find that usually though, people either love or hate my prices. And the people that hate them...Scotch_Roman
- people that hate them... well, they're just in a different world. Good riddance, I say.Scotch_Roman
- I never tell anyone my rates********

To no one in particular.
Quit basing your design prices soley on how long it will take you to complete. You're work has an intangible value beyond the time it spends you to come up with a design. The company will continue to use your image and if done right will continue to make money/improve image/generate leads etc... based on the work you created for them.Plus what if you come up with a great idea in 5mins should you get screwed because you were having a good day. What if you can't come up with an idea to save your life, should they get screwed because you're having a shitty week? Come up with a flat fee based on the use, the company size, your time, your expenses etc...

Hell - to the - no. Those kinds of clients will only continue to low-ball you through-out the process. Best believe that rounds of revisions are going to be endless and that you are going lose more than you make on that one. Plus 250 is stupidly low.......

no way, doing ID work for that price only hurts us all
- that makes no sense. if he doesn't do it, someone else will.

if he is your friend do it for free otherwise charge your common rate.

I have had this before, I would give it a miss as it seems like this person is taking advantage of your good nature.
But maybe help them out by referring it to another designer?

I did 3 biz cards for €260 a while ago. Charged the typeface plus €50/hour. The font was €60 and the 3 cards took me exactly 4 hours to do. Did not involve printing. I just handed the client the files, ready to go. After you establish your own rates according to your own market, it all gets really easy and there will be no subsequent dilemma.

show him 1/4 of a concept - or better yet - show him the 5 concepts but just flash them to him.
- frost2150
wow...seriously underselling myself if you guys are turning down $250 projects. I work a 9-5 and still broke. I'll take whatever money that comes my way. How do you guys turn down $250 projects and get 1k projects? I figure, get the work and money before some one else does.
- monospaced0
Educate the client. You're on the right track.
Let them know that it takes longer than they think to execute and that you feel uncomfortable giving them less than your best, which would happen for $250. If they are a friend, they should understand. This project can turn into a $1K one if you swing it right.
Doing better work is good for your portfolio. A good portfolio is essential in getting those more lucrative projects.
Good luck.

...................................I disagree..
If he doesn't do the logo, someone else will.
There will always be someone somewhere doing the job for free.
There is no way around it.How does that hurt you exactly?
Every designer has different fees, as you can see by the responses here there are people that charge 2 grand for a logo, and some that will do it for $70 bucks.
There will always be clients looking fro both options, an agency will charge 1000 times more than 2 grand, but the reality its all in the negotiation between you and your client.
If you are really good at business and a client tells you, no way I can get Llyod to get that logo for a cheesburger and a pack of parliaments, well you are going to tell him, go hire him. and move to another client.
