A.I. Destroys Champion Gamer
scary part, the bot trained for just 2 weeks to master the game
- It's DotA - all the AI had to do was put a picture of a vagina on the screen and the other player would instantly become scared and confused.face_melter

File under scary.

I'd vaguely heard about some Fentanyl-thrashing synthetic opioid but I'm not much interested in such things these days (esoterically.. I've never dared try heroin) so reading up on this shit finally was quite scary. My first thought was that it'll end up being used to kill people, intentionally.
And lo, a first page google result from the ever shitty Independent states that it's listed under the chemical weapons convention.
The future scares the shit out of me sometimes.
So many potential Great Filters...
- why did I write 'esoterically' in there?
that's not what i meant.detritus - Man, I remembered when people used to get fucked on horse tranqs. Now it's elephants? Nowhere else to go apart from blue whale jellies, I guess.face_melter

Cool, not Scary..
I've been pretty jealous of Germany's fucking-cool looking Wendelstein X-7* small format fusion test lab, ruing our not doing something similar here in the UK... but apparently I was just (as often) wrong and ignant.
I've no idea how these guys are paying for all this (appears to be a private company) but I'm massively happy to see there are more efforts to try and iterate more quickly, and cheaply, to fusion alongside the massive ITER effort, which itself is only a test platform for an even bigger project after.

If you're at all interested in fusion power, I highly recommend this (albeit 1hr 40min long) video from MIT, about how technological gains can, like the two above examples, help iterate developements quickly.

Scary Uncool Tech.
At the moment, facial recognition technology is used mostly for security. But its developers are selling it to retail stores, which would be able to recognize customers, not just shoplifters.
Pierre Racz, CEO of Montreal's Genetec, attends a Las Vegas trade show to demonstrate his company's facial recognition software. At the Genetec booth, his colleague takes my picture and enters my name into the database. When I walk past the camera, the computer instantly flags me and displays my name.
Racz says companies use this technology to analyze shoppers' behaviour: where they go, what grabs their attention.
"It lets them understand the demographics of the shopper, the dwell time of the shopper," Racz says. "So is the shopper interested in a given display, and is this shopper a male or a female?"
Racz says you don't have to worry about your privacy, because the computer will be able to recognize you, but no one else will.
- Yeah,"just the computer", nothing to fear here...Maaku
- i think when i am shopping i'm mostly attracted to perverse, idiotic and gaudy ridiculousness that i never buy. i just spend more time looking at it.sarahfailin

Fucking hell, now more than ever, I hope those fuckers hold true to their 'Do no Evil' mantra.
