so...I am supposed to be looking for a job right now. I haven't been laid off or anything as I am finishing my BFA in three months. From hearing of all these layoffs, I've kind of been discouraged and unenthusiastic about this job hunting process. For those who have been laid off in here, how has the job search been for you?

I get a lot of
"Unfortunately we aren't hiring right now. I'm sure you are hearing that a bunch. Good luck in your search -- I'm sure things will start to open up soon."

Put an online portfolio together. Look for freelance while looking for FT work. Design firms and agencies will be much more likely right now to hire freelancers on a project-by-project basis.

- They found this thread and preempted me: http://www.qbn.com/t…Scotch_Roman
- oh fuck man, that sucks.kelpie
- (nice new name though ;)kelpie
- Ha, thanks. It's like a high school gf who found out she was about to get dumped, and instead did it first so it wouldn't hurt as much.Scotch_Roman
- hurt as much.Scotch_Roman
- They aren't calling it firing tho. I was told that I'm ready to move on, and they're giving me the "wings" to do so—full pay till April.Scotch_Roman
- April. But, I must ask, who placed them in charge of my career?Scotch_Roman
- The answer to the question you've not yet asked is twofold: paranoia and insecurity.Scotch_Roman
- Shame, I liked working there, just didn't get paid enough, and I knew I'd never really move up there.Scotch_Roman
- once again, that sucks man (kelpie here, don't tell digcre its me). onwards and upwards matehungry_coyote

it sucks man, my friend decided he wanted to leave his current position at a local agency for something bigger, and he is been looking with no luck since october, and he is a really good designer.

I got laid off in July and haven't found FT work yet. Freelance comes and goes.

I got pink slipped 2 months ago, just ping your connections, keep learning etc. I am more of a Flex developer though, and work for my old boss' consulting company, so wasn't bad for me. However, I have seen how bad it can get, so don't stop working on getting your skills better at the moment, in anything you can.

- coco_ono0
HAH, Calles - I am not so sure about that, but from the way things are looking, I might have to consider it!

well kidding aside it's pretty gnarly out there... the other day i was in lincoln road, its little street with bars and restaurants, and i keep running into a lot of people that i haven't seen in years! it turns out they all had the same story... cant even find a job as a bar tender or waiter in miami beach... thats pretty bad

More and more people I know are getting laid off. A guy out of the blue the other night called and it turns out he was laid off and was trying to get me to get into some pyramid scheme shit. That's how bad it's gotten out there, he'd resorted to that shit.
I had my third interview with a company the other day and I'm praying to the good Lord I get the position. This freelance contract runs out March 1st and I don't know what I'm going to do once it does if I don't get this job.
I have a buddy who started going around to businesses in his area offering to re-paint their signs for $50. WTF. It's bad.
- coco_ono0
yeah sigg - i was also wondering if some of you guys and/or guys you know who have to revert to doing odd jobs? Because right now i'm serving at a decent restaurant in minneapolis....

kidding aside, I read an article the other day about professional women losing their jobs and becoming independent escorts in/out, airport... haha love those ads.
It's fast and good money, and there's definitely a market for that...

I didn't know it was that bad for him and I asked him if he wanted to buy a $200 office desk of mine for $40 just cause I need to get rid of it and downsize. He said he's in such bad shape he didn't even have $20 bucks to give me for it. Jesus. So I bought him dinner and he ate it like he hadn't eaten in 3 days. It breaks my heart.

Pretty soon everyone will be either a hooker or drug dealer
- lvl_130
my wife has been looking/contacting all the agencies here in minneapolis. as tcmmct said, it's been "Your work is great. Unfortunately we aren't hiring right now. etc. "
it fucking sucks. even talented people can't find work right now :(
- wordsinyourmouth0
if you do interactive work, you should be okay.... if not... start learning?

I think at the end of this, there are be fewer design firms. The weaker firms will fail and the people who aren't really in to it will leave for other industry.
ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE

I was without a job for about a month and a half. During that time, I setup my website, was working with 4 different recruiters which lead to nothing. I sent out countless emails to studios/agencies and got some responses. Mostly, 'We love your work but unfortunately can not hire due to the economy'. Now, I am a Sr designer at a design/marketing agency in Philly and can not be happier. Stay strong and keep your head up. Everything happens for a reason...
- Amen. Good to hear something encouraging for once :)Scotch_Roman
- Great advice... and good for you.NotByHand
