I think at the end of this, there are be fewer design firms. The weaker firms will fail and the people who aren't really in to it will leave for other industry.

I was without a job for about a month and a half. During that time, I setup my website, was working with 4 different recruiters which lead to nothing. I sent out countless emails to studios/agencies and got some responses. Mostly, 'We love your work but unfortunately can not hire due to the economy'. Now, I am a Sr designer at a design/marketing agency in Philly and can not be happier. Stay strong and keep your head up. Everything happens for a reason...
- Amen. Good to hear something encouraging for once :)Scotch_Roman

network like crazy. I'm seeing lots of developer and UE jobs. Also, start-ups seem to be popping up more. I'm working on a business strategy plan for a start-up...partner up with some other people you respect and trust.

Ukit calm down about this draconian nietzche shit. You just gotta take the work that comes your way and make the best of it, I still see job postings even if their shite. One thing's for certain our industry will definitely shrink as a result of these economic hard times.
- draconian nietzche?nilsnihil
- I thought Nietszche was more of a free-wheeler myself...TheBlueOne
- Nietzche was the one that theorized what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and draconian is in reference to draco laws which were harshIggyboo
- draco laws from athens which were particularily harsh.Iggyboo
- what doesn't kill you just leaves.

My company just called a last minute meeting yesterday for this morning and laid off 25 people (we are only around 200 total).
Even though I found out I'm good, this totally sucks. What amazes me is how people can go from being paranoid and on complete edge, back to their smug selves after they discover they are not getting laid off. What about sympathy for the folks who are being let go? I feel pretty horrible for them.

- I know, pretty crazy. Now I feel like I am on a sinking ship.designbot
- designbot: polish up that resume, brother. How's your portfolio looking?Scotch_Roman
- yeah, I just recently redid it and updated it. I am actually going to start working on another flash site...hopefully something better.designbot

don't be discouraged.
I have a full time gig right now.. but recently a lot of people are trying to contact me for onsite freelance.
so start freelancing.. dont worry about the economy and if your good at what you do, you wont have a problem.- nothing wrong with optimism, I applaud you, but come on, there are lots of good people without jobs nowmagnificent_ruin
- it seems a trifle smug to simply project from your own experience what you wish to be truemagnificent_ruin
- I think it's just harmless words of encouragement. Sometimes you needs it.dropdown
- I agree. Nothing wrong with encouragement. My job sucks cock and I would trade its security for some sound/ steady freelance work. ANYDAY
move - p.s my job blows too. I think of quitting everyday.. but a job is better then no job.Audria

I've been laid off in October 07 and didn't find a job yet! Lived in KC area first, and Orlando now. Not sure what's the deal, I applied to jobs that seem to be great for me, but I get little to no response!
Fortunately I've been doing some freelance work, but a FT job would be nice! I hope I'll find a solution soon.- Good luck man, sorry to hear that. If you were still in KC I might be able to help you.designbot

I graduated almost 2 years ago now and got great freelance work, turned down a few full-time positions because the freelance was just better. It just recently started to slow down so I took a full-time position.
If your not lazy you will be fine. And agencies in Chicago are not hiring so good luck with that.

Life is a struggle. You have to keep pushing through and stay strong. If you really love what your doing, it will work itself out.
Just stay focused and keep your head up!

there been massive laid-offs, not cause any of them was lazy. and no one is really hiring. so i don't see how any of them can be fine. sure some get unemployment checks. still.
by the way, i had a full-time position. there is no security. they can laid you off anytime and give any excuse. back to square one.
