Just found out I'm getting a generous bonus this year and some additional investment in my 401k, but no raises for any of us. I've carved off a healthy pound of flesh for the company this year, and feel I should be making 10–20k more.
Poll: Should I stay and be grateful to have a job at a prestigious firm that allows me to make ends meet, or should I dust off the resume and set dynamite to metagramme.com to make way for the new 'folio? Even with the bonus, I will most likely have to take on some freelance work since I am a new father and since my wife wants to stay home with our son as much as possible.

both!
- and I mean this... start building up your own deal while racking up the experience... THEN proceed on your own. :)turk_182
- you mean stay as well as overhauling my website?gramme

It doesn't hurt to put feelers out. I always keep my stuff out there even when I'm happy with my job. You never know when something better will come along. Most of the jobs I've gotten have been because someone else ended up contacting me. Definitely don't just cut ties with your job in this crappy economy.

stay and address the raise when the economy is better - if they don't give at that point, then you leave

this aint a marriage so cheating is ok

see... i wouldn't even depend on the raise or look for it... stay focused on yourself / folio / personal clients while maintaining that income (and doing a good job!!... don't let your internal work slip at all)...
... i say this cuz I get the feeling you want to go on your own anyway... so get your brain and life angled that direction and it will happen. :)

Smart money is on always keeping the resume up to date, portfolio shiny, and hitting the occasional interview.

can't really comment on the job part as i have no idea where you work. but you should kill metagramme and start again. your work is much nicer than your site shows at the moment.

I agree, the 2005 relic that is my current website needs to be hanged, taken down while still alive, drawn, quartered and in the meantime taught some manners about full-screen pop-ups. I'm going witch hunt upside this bitch.
Thanks guys for the motivation. I've already created a new logotype for myself in the past few months. Got some idears for a promo too. I think I'll tackle the website over Christmas vacation (another reason I guess for keeping the current gig for the moment...)
I'm keeping the Metagramme name, I still like it but things will look very, very different in '09. Stay tuned!

You chaps think I should teach myself Flash? The last time I made a website, I hired someone and it was like pulling teeth the entire time. I fired that guy and found someone else who graciously offered their services for free, but it was still a difficult process. I've since gotten better at work with people in tangential disciplines, but still... if you want something done right and have the means, do it yourself right?
Bottom line, I either need to offer the deadline-sensitive incentive of paying someone, or buy it and teach myself. I'm a bit shy of Flash, since the left side of my brain is fairly empty.

you should give flash a go. there are a lot of resources out there to accomplish anything you want to do. I am gonna go that route for the 09 redesign as well..
downside is the updates are a bit of a hassle
