I feel like Design has definitely shifted from trying to find ground breaking studios and a creativity outlet to, let's just be able to make some money and survive. It's terrible for those who have families and mortgages to take care of... The reality in my opinion is if you have a design job you're fortunate. And if you hate your design job thats sad, but understandable. There's a lot of talent out there w/o work... Hopefully after everything goes to total shit, we will at least be left with a more appreciative perspective. But I doubt it. A lot I my friends are trying and exploring new interests, there's nothing to do but hang in there.

there been massive laid-offs, not cause any of them was lazy. and no one is really hiring. so i don't see how any of them can be fine. sure some get unemployment checks. still.
by the way, i had a full-time position. there is no security. they can laid you off anytime and give any excuse. back to square one.

I graduated almost 2 years ago now and got great freelance work, turned down a few full-time positions because the freelance was just better. It just recently started to slow down so I took a full-time position.
If your not lazy you will be fine. And agencies in Chicago are not hiring so good luck with that.

Yah dont narrow your self down to agencies only. Lots of finance companies / health care / pharma places are hiring for design

network like crazy. I'm seeing lots of developer and UE jobs. Also, start-ups seem to be popping up more. I'm working on a business strategy plan for a start-up...partner up with some other people you respect and trust.

I've been laid off in October 07 and didn't find a job yet! Lived in KC area first, and Orlando now. Not sure what's the deal, I applied to jobs that seem to be great for me, but I get little to no response!
Fortunately I've been doing some freelance work, but a FT job would be nice! I hope I'll find a solution soon.- Good luck man, sorry to hear that. If you were still in KC I might be able to help you.designbot

My company just called a last minute meeting yesterday for this morning and laid off 25 people (we are only around 200 total).
Even though I found out I'm good, this totally sucks. What amazes me is how people can go from being paranoid and on complete edge, back to their smug selves after they discover they are not getting laid off. What about sympathy for the folks who are being let go? I feel pretty horrible for them.

- I know, pretty crazy. Now I feel like I am on a sinking ship.designbot
- designbot: polish up that resume, brother. How's your portfolio looking?Scotch_Roman

learn to do something useful, like fix bicycles, grow food, brew beer, build a shelter, tame wild horses, breed burros, keep out invaders with a shotgun / mortar, kung-fu, knife fighting, body guarding, yogurt making... etc
The world doesn't need another BFA.
- I'd love to see a couple thousand fewer lawyers and accountants and few more BFAstedvandell
- breed burritos? that sounds like a delicious hobby! lolzFrosty_spl
