I was deathly sick once and even the bosses wife/secretary told me I shouldn't be in the office. The next day I called in sick and they called my house to ask a question about a job and I wasn't there so they fired me.
That job sucked so bad anyway. They made me wear a tie and they didn't have any office space left so they built a cube in the warehouse. Everyday when the UPS truck would open the dock doors it would blow all my paper work off my desk with 30 degree winter breezes.

I left ever job on good terms. Even when the job sucked and I didn't want/need the reference. In fact all my employers were sad that I left.

But not next time. Next time I'm going to make a SCENE!

    • Make sure you take a public DUMP as part of that scene.CyBrainX

I've been laid off and fired. Got laid off at my first design job, but it was all on good terms. They let me use the company printer for 2 weeks while putting together my portfolio and resume. They even threw a going away party for me.

The first time I got fired was in college. I totally deserved it. I got caught "fixing" a tip. I had already received one warning. I think I got off easy, considering that credit fraud is a felony. This was back when I was not quite so scrupulous, i.e. before I became a Christian.

The second time I got fired, I told my boss in veiled language that I considered his boss to be an idiot. Beyond that I'm not quite sure why he fired me, unless he could actually see in my body language that I didn't think very highly of him either.

Overall I think these experiences have made me a much better employee, and have given me a stiff dose of reality. There is nothing in this life that is firmly anchored.

    • Didn't you get fired for taking shit about your employer here?MarleyMarl

I was "employed" to be a caddy at an amateur golf tournament. I was late and dropped the guys clubs as soon as he gave them to me... I never made it onto the fairway.

A while back I was fired from a major ad agency after I just stopped coming in to work. Some days I would roll in late morning and leave mid afternoon. Other days I wouldn't even show up and never call or email to let them know. It was the worst work environment I've ever been in by far. Horrible management/creative direction and just a general lack of character and culture. So, I basically said fuck it and did whatever I wanted to do. This debauchery lasted a good 6 months before HR began their protocol and my position was finally terminated.

The best thing was the look on the HR woman's face when she explained she had to escort me back to my desk to clean out and then walk me out of the building. I said no need, I'll just leave now, I don't have anything at my desk. Besides their computer/workstation there may have been a single pen left on that desk.

    • awesome. I dream of days like that. did you hold out for the unemployment?
      ********
    • Yep. In a petty sort of way I filed for unemployment but my case was turned down. It was worth a try tho.metal_leg_will

I got fired from a restaurant job about 12 years ago, for ordering myself a Heineken and subsequently drinking said Heineken, while on my shift. Thing is I wasn't fiending for booze as much as I was just bored (slow season). I got escorted out by a gay security guard who had a crush on me, which was awkward to say the least. A week later I got propositioned over the phone by my old manager, who was totally hot (and a woman). Ah, the good 'ol days ;-)

come to think about it they tried to deny me unemployment benefits too. I finally got them and had to actually go down there and sit with all the other unemployable people. How depressing was that!
This was before you could do everything online while traveling the globe while collecting benefits.

I got laid off ten days before xmas once... got about 8 weeks pay for the trouble though. This was despite the fact that every client I had worked with had more than doubled their business with us since I started with them.

4 or 5 other staff members quit over the next 3 months or so (partly in protest) which made me feel much better.

fired for smoking outside when I should have been inside working. It happened like 20 umpteen times, though, so the last time was pretty obvious. I was asked to take a 5 day suspension and so I never came back. Didn't like working at Red Lobster anyway.

    • should have smoked inside

got fired once because of my asshole roommate. we were roommates and worked at the same company, i was in design he was in dev. he started his own design company on the side and asked me to design his logo and give him some samples of work for his site to get up and running. then the dumbass turns around and bids against some of the clients of the company i was still working for. they of course see my work and are like wtf!?! my boss calls me into his office during my 4pm tuna/brown rice meal and starts cussing at me and i honestly had no idea what he was talking about. after 5 min of him swearing at me i said "FUCK YOU" and threw my tuna into his bookshelf.

some of the other employees told me that it stunk like tuna in his office for months after. lol.

    only time i've been fired.

    Whatever happened to Llyod/uberdesigner?

  • SoulFly0

Only time I got fired, it was a 3 people operation. President, secretary and designer (myself). For some reason I dont think that counts. But i got fired for being too expensive, by not being able to finish a logo in less than an hour.

    • good thing they had a secretary to handle all that business.monNom

Yeah, for a summer job in a disgusting factory years ago. It was my first day and I had to stack stuff on pallets, the floor manager showed me how he wanted it to be laid. He did the whole first row. I did the rest and when a fork lift truck came to move it, it all collapsed and I got blamed for not laying it properly, despite simply stacking stuff on top based on what was already done.

I wasn't going to come back the next day anyway it was absolutely the most disgusting place I have ever been, they make floor coatings.

    nope, never.

My first job, fired from Shop Rite. I think I was 16. I was a cashier that day, and an old man came through with a ton of groceries. I rung it all up and at the end he gave me a pile of coupons.

You're supposed to check each one, but I didnt and rung them all through. 4 bags of groceries and he only ended up paying like $12 and I let him go. The manager stopped him immediately and checked his receipt.

Normally they would have just yelled at me, but not fire me for a first time offense like this, but for some unknown reason when they asked him about it, he said he knew me and I was doing him a favor. Fucking scumbag. All these years later why he said he knew me is still one of the great mysteries of my life.
