As a graduate still looking for that first junior position Ive been advised that January is usually quite busy in terms of employment. Would people with more industry experience agree / lend any advice. Im UK based.

There is no "perfect" time, but earlier is always better IMHO, especially if you have a few places in mind already (and you know they might be receiving a lot of applicants). The employees at a shop will likely have the most to do with you getting an interview or not (that's how it has always been at the places I have worked), and if they see good work come in - regardless of what time of year it is, they will want to chat.
My 2 cents, and good luck.

The way i picked up my first job was to go on portfolio reviews even if they didn't have a position available. I went in to a place I wanted to work and they liked my work, but didn't have any positions. But the Creative Director had a friend who owned a studio and he hooked me up with them. I got lots of good feedback and was even more comfortable showing my portfolio knowing they didn't have a job.
Long story short, show your portfolio to as many people in the industry as possible. It's good for you to practice and get feedback.

Like capn_ron said... Check out some of the studios you would like to work at and try to meet some peeps that are working there. Having a name to drop or a story to reference of a current employee can get you far.
It's very important to get in somewhere and start working asap. The experience you will gain in the first 6 months will totally change your perspective of what it's like to be a designer. At least for me it did. I look back now and realize I didn't know shit after school. Just keep trying and things will fall into place. Good luck.

Not sure that January will offer a 'Big Hiring drive', apparently there is a financial crisis or something, maybe it's just a rumour eh.

Most studios, agencies... etc, are fully aware of when new batches of students graduate and typically will bombard them with resumes.
My advise is to not be 'over-the-top-creatively-annoyin... in an attempt to stand out from everyone else. Be chill. Trust that people at good places quickly will know if your work is fresh.
Also, do some research about the places you approach. Everyone loves to be complimented on work they've done, while it shows you have some level of knowledge and passion for the particular place.
Most of all, don't ever offer up the 'jack of all trades' approach in trying to get your foot in the door by any means necessary. Nothing is a clearer signal of mediocracy than someone who isn't professionally focused (imo).Good luck.
