    There is no "perfect" time, but earlier is always better IMHO, especially if you have a few places in mind already (and you know they might be receiving a lot of applicants). The employees at a shop will likely have the most to do with you getting an interview or not (that's how it has always been at the places I have worked), and if they see good work come in - regardless of what time of year it is, they will want to chat.
