Since I like the symbolism of a new year (and the fact that my birthday was last week) I'm trying to make some plans that I can stick to for the new year in terms of health and exercise. Among them...
Giving up coffee (will be horrible)
Eating more fruit and vegetables
Getting a gym membership and being committed to it.
Getting more sleep.I realize every year that every year is the same - very little energy, dependent on coffee every day, feel strange from poor diet, etc. and now that I'm engaged and getting married this 09, I just want to do things to change all this so I feel like a new person, so I get up in the morning ready to go, mentally sharp, not lazy. Not so sure I can commit to giving up coffee because I LOVE LOVE LOVE good coffee. Maybe just reduce to a cup a day...
Anyone have any success stories of anything similar? Would love some "been there, done that, life's great" advice.

drink tea instead maybe?
I found that shopping at trader joe's or the equivalent helps a lot
drink a lot of water
the gym thing- I'd much rather find a physical activity (hiking, running, cycling, etc) that you can get into. the gym is very boring, dull and repetitive

i used to drink 2 cups of coffee a day. i stopped drinking coffee in the afternoon, and I found if i nurse my coffee in the morning up until lunch time I sometimes don't even finish a whole one.
About the gym membership - I "reward" myself with a new album prior or after a week's worth of working out. And I only listen to that album that week during working out.
Sleep thing I'm still trying to figure out.

I drink 2+ liters of water a day actually and drink a decent amount of loose leaf tea - herbal, green, mate, etc. all from Argo Tea, which is in the ground floor of my office building.
I love Trader Joes! Great food, good prices.
The one thing I don't do lately that I really like is making a fruit smoothie in the morning with blueberries, green tea, almonds, protein powder, wheat grass, and flax seed. It's the Men's Health Super Shake recipe. More nutrients at the beginning of the day than you can get pretty much any other way.
- tea, wheat grass, almonds, protein powder...... a good newyears res would be to act more like a man.?? j/konewhoslaps

I gave up coffee years ago. I drink green tea instead, and it's fantastic.

stopped drinking coffee for almost 2 years and then just started up again a few months ago. i figure i don't have many vices and if this is one of them, i'm ok w/it.
i'll have to stop again shortly for a while, which buggers me to no end :\

I gave up coffee for a full week in 2006 and it was tough. Just quit cold turkey. The big change was that my body physically and mentally KNEW it had to go to bed around 10:00 pm. There was no "you can stay up and push it for another hour or two" demon in my brain.
Even though I don't drink coffee after 12pm during the workweek, I think the remnants of it in my system make me anxious throughout the day and I just can't go to bed early. Regularly stay up until midnight or 1am doing a variety of things.

Oh, and if you drink a lot of water everyday in a plastic cup or something, STOP and get one of these:

I got one last week and water tastes so much better, or, I guess I should say it doesn't taste like plastic. Stays pretty cold and just flat out rules.

Interesting,
Came across something about soybean coffee:
http://www.soycoffee.com/index.p…I think I like the taste more than the effects of coffee. I buy really good whole bean coffee at a place down the street, and it's just over-the-top delicious.

Everything in moderation. Why give it up completely if you really love a good cup of coffee? As mentioned a few posts back, a reward system might work well for you. I do that with beer ; ) I love a good beer so I'm very active now to say the least.
One cup of coffee in the morning if you did something good for yourself the day before.
