MrDoob - im sure you'll appreciate this if you havent seen it yet

The problem with having dev/designer is you end up with mediocrity.
I am a Web Designer who does end up doing coding...in fact, more than I would like. The thing about this is that you are using completely different sides of your brain. Yes, some people fall somewhere in the middle...creative/technical..but most people are on one side or the other. People thrive when they are in a position where they are using they're unique talents to the max, and not trying to bridge some gap and play jack of all trades.
I can be 100% sure, being more creative than technical, when I code pages it simply can't compare with someone who is a real developer. Sure I can hack my way through most things, but it's certainly not ideal. Does this make you more marketable? Perhaps, but any agency/company worth it's weight will understand the benefits of hiring a team of developers and designers to work together.

A guy I used to work with was pretty good at both. Then he screwed me over. The end.

works out well for me in that a couple agencies use me for both roles.. they can book 1 person for 2 positions. and as a freelancer i never get the really good/creative/fun work from them anyways :)

ffs, haven't people heard of front end developers?
i just see more and more companies looking for people that can bridge that gap between developer and designer. and html/css does not mean "developer."
being able to come at a technical problem from a creative angle brings fresh ideas that a lot of developers would never consider.
I take joy in being able to design something, and then make it work the way I want to, and not the way some narrow minded developer might decide it has to be. Conception to completion.
I'm not saying I don't think that the traditional Designer and Developer roles aren' important, and don't work, but if you think that that is the only way things work, and should work, then stick with print, and stay off my internets. :)

yes. the phrase we are all looking for is definitely "front-end developer." that's my title at work, also. someone who knows enough of both sides that is able to code back-end when needed and do a little photoshop when needed.

I rule out /html/css/ as development. At my work its the designers role to provide the markup spec and css frameworks to the developer to be turned out into the mvc framework of his choosing. Just curious how deep the designers out there get into that kinda stuff. For the record i work at a very small company.
- Agreed. This is fairly common.
Development involves backend logic, db, etc. Design tends now to involve the CSS/XHTML.********

I don't think you can be a good interactive designer and not know the technology.

leaving wp behind for django.

I think they are a rare breed, and often you do find people that are much stronger at one facet than the other.
I would say that guys like Shaun Inman are considered to be good at both. He does php development as well as design and front-end code.In my experience, you have to forget about how you are going to develop somethign when you design it. Otherwise, you will end up with a bunch of boxes. Unless you can truly do that, you are going to fall a little short of excellence.

Lol, I've heard the term Devigner thrown around a few times. Makes me gag.
- designbot0
front end developer = web production
stop throwing around that fancy term that nobody uses :P
- there are people out there with real skills that would resent that. It makes it seem like you are just pushing buttons in DWheavyt
- I did this work for several years, so I know it does take skill. I just don't like it being thrown around like some design/dev hybrid title.designbot
- yeah, i guess the definition is pretty loose.heavyt
