The problem with having dev/designer is you end up with mediocrity.
I am a Web Designer who does end up doing coding...in fact, more than I would like. The thing about this is that you are using completely different sides of your brain. Yes, some people fall somewhere in the middle...creative/technical..but most people are on one side or the other. People thrive when they are in a position where they are using they're unique talents to the max, and not trying to bridge some gap and play jack of all trades.
I can be 100% sure, being more creative than technical, when I code pages it simply can't compare with someone who is a real developer. Sure I can hack my way through most things, but it's certainly not ideal. Does this make you more marketable? Perhaps, but any agency/company worth it's weight will understand the benefits of hiring a team of developers and designers to work together.
