to be honest, most of the guys I see who claim to do both design and development, fall short on at least oneif not both counts. That, as said, doesn't count CSS, but is more about PHP/ASP, Javascript, AS (I suppose to a lesser extent), and general knowledge of languages and ability to learn and pick up new ones. Either they have good design skills and don't really touch the code stuff very deeply, or the design just isn't up to scratch in the details and is usually more an enhanced version of that 'developer look' we all are aware of.

- I've worked with programmers who can execute a front enf far far better than anyone I have seen on here. They do so in quite surpising, efficient ways, unencumbered by the original designers concept of his/her grid etc. depends on the peoplekelpie

What about Actionscript? Many of the people that I know that are best at writing AS applications are very good designers.
As far at other languages, I guess it depends upon the depth of ability before defining someone as a developer. Most people working in the web realize that the more you understand and can execute on the development side, the easier your life is in the production and maintenance phases of a project.
There certainly seems to be a gray area between the two.

best for me 100% at all times is a good team of people with specialist skills who each have an interest and appreciation of each others area of expertise, communicating well. Everyone focusing on their own bit and doing it as well is it can be done. I think all0rounders are admirable, but over rated

it might do - criminally underfunded and misunderstood youth programs are already working in the east end of glasgow, but they don't conform to the central policy drives necessarily so they don't get rolled out with enough resource to make enough of a difference.
Gangs built glasgow though and the tribalism is massively ingrained, as is a culture of street war and violence first that will be enormously hard to break and which is much worse than other areas of the UK.
The thing is though, kids out there can't even go to the other side of their street without being targetted as an outsider and attacked, any time the kids are given a program early enough in thier lives which humanises the "others" from the other territories they bond and make friends and a little of the problem goes away temporarily.
I hope it does work, the only alternative is giving up on them and letting everyone else there suffer the consequences.
