    I think they are a rare breed, and often you do find people that are much stronger at one facet than the other.
    I would say that guys like Shaun Inman are considered to be good at both. He does php development as well as design and front-end code.

    In my experience, you have to forget about how you are going to develop somethign when you design it. Otherwise, you will end up with a bunch of boxes. Unless you can truly do that, you are going to fall a little short of excellence.
