is this trend gonna die are we really gonna be innovators and come up with new stuff instead recycling things that are considered cool?

isn't every trend recycled anyway? Isn't everything trite in general? including this conversation topic? I'm not trying to kill the topic or be disingenuous, i just sincerely wonder about how much of our lives are recycled...

Vintage is nostalgia. It's a simple way to spark an emotional response from the consumer and then sell them shit.

one thing I can't stand is a website constructed to look vintage, like an old radio or something
- why? It might be a little overused, but there are nice sites out there that make it work. IMO...OSFA

we're commercial artists. due to the job we'll 'generally' solve briefs with what's relevant at the time. many of these solutions will be trends. granted this isn't always the case but the more media-hyped briefs will be - soft drinks, movie artwork, major media company brands, etc.
if you're all about innovating then you're either wanting to be an artist or you just read one of david carson's books and figured you're next to blow us all away with a collection of the same stylings applied to various unrelated clients. (btw it always makes me feel good that as good as i think carson was, that first Bush cd cover + logo are worse than my worst job ever).
just my 2 cents. i'm probably wrong.

So far I've only had one client interested in my original ideas and when I see him in the mirror I wonder if he's really brilliant as he think he is.

good design is timeless. there is a reason why a lot of rubbish doesn't get re-invented.
timeless design develops patterns, conventions and general behaviors in people.
therefore there is sometimes no reason to re-invent the wheel. why would you? the idea is to create something people can "use"?
so yes, when solving a problem that has been around for a long time, you will inevitably come up with something that has already been done. only thing is, the execution will be slightly different.
there in lies the beauty of modern cultures and advancements in technology. new problems are created, and only then can you truly come up with new solutions.

so what happened to nick?

reason i worote this post is cuz were i work when we get a job and and are told to do something creative our "creative" directors always take from something we used to do or riff off something else.. I think some of it is cool to riff off other stuff and I admit i do it to,, but i always think about those revolutionaries the ones who come up with trends and just seems like people get comfortable and dont take risks.. so lets take risks
- you start. if it works i'll follow you...airey
- most designers aren't that goodhallelujah
