good design is timeless. there is a reason why a lot of rubbish doesn't get re-invented.
timeless design develops patterns, conventions and general behaviors in people.
therefore there is sometimes no reason to re-invent the wheel. why would you? the idea is to create something people can "use"?
so yes, when solving a problem that has been around for a long time, you will inevitably come up with something that has already been done. only thing is, the execution will be slightly different.
there in lies the beauty of modern cultures and advancements in technology. new problems are created, and only then can you truly come up with new solutions.
