im sure ive said it before on a guitar thread on here previously ....
but, guitarists are like photographers, always on the hunt for the most expensive newest bits of kit to brag about - when really, some of the cheapest kit can produce just as wonderful results.
i know its about the feeling of it in your hands and how it plays, sounds and lasts and that there is a difference between like a £20 acoustic and a £200 acoustic.
But is there REALLY much of a noticeable difference between £200 and £2000 thats worth spending the extra on?Personally, i dont think so
it's all about the bragging i reckon.
a good guitar doeth not maketh a good guitarist.ive been playing bass guitar (and guitar) since i was 16 (now 33) and the bass ive got is the same one i had 12+ years ago - a yamaha one. cant fault the thing, was only a few hundred quid and has lasted stupidly well.
on the guitar front ive got a gibson les paul copy - again, a few hundred quid, and its lasted 10+ years too and is stll going strong and sounding good.- Nobody cares what bass players think. Or even if.boobs

I can see your point, but disagree.
A great guitarist can make a 100 dollar guitar sound good. But he would prob sound 10x better on a 1000 dollar one. All depends on what you are going for tonally, though. A cheap acoustic can sound REAL bad.
The other thing is that guitars are (can be) beautifully crafted objects made of rare/costly materials. Part of the appeal to a lot of collectors is simply how wide a variety of beautifully crafted instruments there are. Cameras are plastic and metal, and usually not beautiful to look at.

There is a definite difference, just with anything else. Now that being said, there is value in all instruments.
As a guitar player for over 23 years, I have become obsessed with finding the perfect tones and sounds of guitars. These tones are generally found in the high quality staples of the guitar world. Gibson, Fender, Prs, Guild, Martin , etc ,etc. They are built by professional craftsman and they sound like it.
Now, if I want to achieve a certain tone or personality with a cheap , beat up POS that's cool too. I have done that before. But there IS a difference between a funky pawn shop clank and a Les Paul Custom. No argument.
Same thing goes for amps. The more you sculpt your tone, the more you realize the $$ shit is that for a reason. Because they know what they are doing. Try putting a crappy crate or line6 up against a Rivera or a VHT. Night and day.
- That silver-burst LP yours?!baseline_shift
- yeahmorilla
- Dig it man! Love that bright white binding on the grey/black.baseline_shift
- thanks, that thing is like butter. Best LP I have played yet.morilla
- morilla0
like I pointed out earlier in this thread. They are also investments if you are into collecting.

Here's my crap guitar
A Harmony Explorer copy.Does it sound like morilla's beaut up there? Hells no. Would i record a legit album with it? No. But it was cheap, looks pretty cool and after it's run thru the right effects, sounds as good as i need it to.
That is to say, it all depends what you want to get out of it
- these are coolmorilla
- Dig the 2 tone bodymorilla
- yeah, the stripes are what got me. The Daddy's Junky Music i bought it at almost sent it to another store. i had to get them to dig it out from the back roomlocustsloth
- to dig it out from the back roomlocustsloth
- dig the 2 one. The bridge and nobs SCREAM telecaster. Interesting guitar.baseline_shift
- mg330
23kon,
I play two telecasters, both mexican made, and would not at all pay money for the American made equivalent just to say or feel like I had an American telecaster. The differences between the Standard and American Standard are so minimal, it just wouldn't be worth it.
I also play my first guitar, a 92 Squier Strat that I've had since then.
Acoustics, on there other hand - there's something to be said for spending more for a better guitar. I love Taylors. I'd love to have one but don't at all need one - my Epiphone PR5 suits me just fine, and I've had it since 95.
I'm left handed, BTW, so the guitars I really want are fewer and far between, and one of the reasons I'm hoping to have a custom guitar built within the next year by a guy in Chicago that I know very well and who does incredible work. It will be a cross between a Tele thinline and a Tele Deluxe.
- morilla0
Have you seen those custom Teles from the custom shop going for 6 Grand? WTF. If I want a guitar to look that beat up, I want to do it myself and save all that $$.
- yeah, the whole distressed guitar thing is for midlife crisis jerks who'll just hang it on a wall after a weeklocustsloth
- Which is to say i'll be buying one in 15 yrs or solocustsloth
- Is this like the 'Joe Strummer Edition' or whatever they call it? Just a trashed looking tele thats brand new?baseline_shift
- I saw one on Youtube at the Namm show. I looked similar to the one below.morilla
- baseline_shift0
- oh god, that's even worse!!locustsloth
- the rusty hardware on this makes me gaglocustsloth
- i know man. Part of a guitars appeal to me is beautiful finishes and materials. WTF!?baseline_shift
- I've considered this only because I'm a huge Joe Strummer/The Clash fan but the rust hardware turned me off.fooler2
- locustsloth0
- Is this actually a 50s tele, or is this a brand new one, modeled after the 50s model, and grunged out?baseline_shift
- newlocustsloth
- yuck. i love how they have worn out spots on the neck where one would 'solo'.baseline_shift

I personally don't believe that a £200 guitar with good enough intonation actually exists.
By good enough - I mean I don't want it to annoy the shit out of me every time I play it.
Good intonation = good workmanship, and I'm afraid that means paying just that little bit more.
No one wants to play an out of tune guitar.
- playig a tuned instrument? Where's the challenge in that?!?! :Plocustsloth
- mg330
morilla,
Yeah, I've seen em. No one in their right mind would play one live if they wanted to go home with any self-respect.
There's a store in Chicago called Chicago Music Exchange (http://www.chicagomusicexchange... that used to be located in a smaller store near Wrigley Field. They absolutely HATED the crowds that would file in on game days - rich suburban folk and collectors who couldn't play worth a damn but wanted to buy all kinds of vintage guitars. I've got to give them credit for that. The inventory at this store is unreal. Look at the scrolling image of the store - they have about 1,000 guitars on the floor at any one time - 90% are used/vintage, and their total inventory is around 2,500 - 3,000 guitars. The new store is like a shrine to guitars and equipment. I can't go in there without crying.

- cool headstocklocustsloth
- kewl. Never seen one with a humbucker in the bridge position. Or that headstock...baseline_shift
- I changed out the pickguard to a plain black one.morilla

- is that a 'hammered metal' surface?baseline_shift
- In some shots it looks like cracked glass. I really can't tell but it's very reflective...jfletcher
