two words: job security
- Exactly. If your whole office switches that means they might lose their jobs if they don't know Maclocustsloth
- sikma0
of course they want to use PC - otherwise you wouldn't need them around
- doesnotexist0
maybe if you let them know you could nix the IT dept., you'll get some macs and some enemies.

After yesterday's 'upgrade from PC to Mac?' thread, I was considering starting a genuine "Mac vs. PC" thread, so that we could get some legitimate answers on the problem - not people's prejudice or assumption.
Trouble is - everyone has a vested interest, borne of their experience.
'Techies' tend to come from the Win camp, so will always promote Win over Mac, as it's what they understand. Conversely, 'designies' will generally promote Mac over Win, for the similar reasons.
Personally, I really don't think there's that fundamental a difference between the two platforms - I like them both, but all this antiWin Mac Fanboyism really gets on my tits, because it tends to be people who don't really know much about computers shouting off.
For your situation, I'd say you get the people who are going to use the computers the most to make the decision - it's a techies job to work out the mess afterwards, whilst it's your designers and developers that will have to spend all day, every day with the bloody things.
- You have tits?! hi there :Dlocustsloth
- "gets on my tits"... ha ha ha u britsherm
- Would you like to touch them? Nustle up to them - lick them a little? They're hairy. Come on, have a nipple nibble.Nairn
- *LACTATES MOTHERFUCKING EVERYWHERE*Nairn
- usability is the reason.
mac winssurfito - HAHAHAHAHAHA *choke. remembers not laugh while suckling7point34
- If you mean it enough to write it, please qualify your opinion, surfito.Nairn
- i know a shit load about PC's, macs are just so simple and clean...pencilpants

do you guys do web? every mac comes with apache & php built in. all you have to do is turn web sharing on and you have a webserver.
- Windows Vista has IIS. Turn it on and you have a webserver.killthefish
- Fariska0
If you have a basic knowledge of how a computer works and how a GUI works, this question is irrelevant.
Otherwise, keep your system you're using. You won't screw things up.
- powertoni0
i disagree...i own & work on both and my productivity is much higher on the mac...
- Any reason why? What's your history with both systems?Nairn
- I'm less familiar with Mac, so could easily say "my productivity's better on a PC" which means nothing, really.Nairn
- i agree.al_la
- What work are you doing? Video/motion graphics, then I agree. Otherwise, meh.ETM
- after effects & flash mostly, (plus all usual cs)powertoni
- jamble0
My productivity slumps on Mac, it's because everything is back to front and doesn't work as well as on PC. So there.
- Fariska0
that was exactly my point: if you are skilled enough you'll be able to choose the system that fits your way of work, without going around shouting "PC is better!" or a "Get a Mac!".

Errr... A Mac is a PC... it's a personal computer... it just runs OSX or leopard or whatever shit... it still files in 1's and 0's it still goes on the interwebs, and it's the same shit. It just has a different GUI... and no left click button. and it looks like a fucking tonka toy version of a real GUI... anybody ever heard of Linux?
- no left click? in what era do you live in?ESKEMA
- you f--kin' rtard, Macs have supported all multi-button mice since the beginning.monospaced
- here we gosherm
- BattleAxe0
keep in mind software will you have to pony up for a whole new library of Mac apps , vs what you have already ?
I have a PC desktop and a mac book , there are times I want to throw both of them out the window, no pun intended
- doesnotexist0
I prefer osx to windoze as there are nice keyboard commands that get my work done. I feel trapped in a box when I use a pc, and it's operations aren't nearly as transparent as they are on the mac.
- Can't figure out how to setup keyboard shortcuts on your PC, huh?killthefish
- skulldaggery0
ugh... that is incorrect mister doesnotexist... not incorrect as much as misleading... PC's have quick commands too, and to me their interface is much more transparent as I've used one since 1989... it's just a matter or habit forming. let me go start a new idiotic thread now.
- powertoni0
ok.....
1 there are quick keys to do EVERYTHING on a mac....1 stroke is all thats required to do the simplest, most common tasks. on pc everything is through the right click window. That alone speeds you up
2. apple scripts / shell scripts / automator (what do you do if you need do delete every file with a certain extension etc. etc.)
3. On a mac it @ least fucking tells you (in an obvious way) when your battery is going. On my pc it goes from working to black screen with no warning....waking it up requires starting it up...
4. Folder actions....to upload to my server all i have to do is drag an item to a certain directory....
- 1) A right-click is slower and less intuitive than a key-combo? Really?Nairn
- 2) This laptop tells me every 20 minutes before battery's going down, progressively more whiner as it goes on.Nairn
- oops, I mixed up 2 and 3) K, that is a bit better - though I can just sort by date and extension, then delete.Nairn
- 4) Again, that's quite a good one, though you can do it through winExplorer (personally, I use a droppit box)Nairn
- you can right click on a Mac, you idiotmonospaced
- read it again nice guy....powertoni
- the point was that quickeys, in my opinion ARE faster than using the contexutal menu....IM typing this on my PC laptop btw.powertoni
- PC....I do use BOTH everyday.powertoni
- sikma0
IMHO this is how i always saw it
PC - people who care about how the computer works and want to tinker with it
vs.
Mac - people who don't care about the computer itself but rely on it to get a job done with no fuss
- disagree.....thats unix vs dos. i spend 1/2 my day in the terminalpowertoni
- then you fall into my PC categorysikma
- even though terminal.app is only on the mac?powertoni
- on pc its "hyperterminal" or a dos promptpowertoni
- you just keep moving further and further into the first category.....sikma
- ah. I can see i am speaking with a retarded person. Hey little buddy!!!powertoni
- grow upsikma
- powertoni0
Also...people act like the state of the operating system doesnt matter. How many of you are still using XP because the vista codebase is such shit. Unix is objectively better than dos.

Since we're on the subject, I have two questions about Macs:
1) Some of my programs in the Applications folder got installed into the Applications folder and not a subfolder. Can I simply add a subfolder and drag/drop those programs and their files into the new subfolder?
2) How do you fully uninstall a program on Leopard?
- powertoni0
Flash develop on pc rocks (and is free! how much does flash cost again?) though...and isnt available tor mac.

Answers:
1- dont. the system relies on paths to get to stuff. while what you want to do is possible and probably things will be ok, you are asking for trouble.2- click, drag, trash. while there are some files it leaves behind, usually in the form of preference files, they wont hurt the system and takes up miniscule amount of space. if you want a complete de install, try this app:
PS- for those uneducated folks, the mac has had right click for decades. the packaged mouse has 4 buttons, including the holy grail right click PC people always think is missing. just turn it on. and if you are on a laptop or dont want right click turned on and want to use a right click system, hold the control key.

Well Mac people are un-technical to laughable degree. My friend installed some plugin for FCP the other day and he spends 45 min trying to get it to work finally clamming that it just won't work. Me, coming from PC world, where everything can be solved with a simple restart, just double check whether he has restarted the computer... no he hasn't... WTF, i'm thinking. That's just idiocy 101 no matter how you look at it.
- That's becasue we're used our shit workingGlitterati_Duane
- *becauseGlitterati_Duane
- exactly, a restart is not necessary for 98% of stuff including installations.ArmandoEstrada
- yeah, me too, and your point is?pr2
- My point is that PC's have more issues that force their users to trouble shoot.Glitterati_Duane
- that just proves your friend is stupid, not the OSESKEMA
- Mac users just expect things to work and when they don't there's usually a WTF moment..
Glitterati_Duane - Not oh that problem again. I'll just hit restart.Glitterati_Duane
- Yeah your friend is stupid though.Glitterati_Duane
- Strange then, how many times over the years here, I've seen people being told to restart their macs...Nairn
- yeah and i would rate this guys as somehow technically savvy, shit what an average mac person has to...pr2
- ...go through if shit doesn't work.... don't worry , the sky isn't falling on your head.pr2
