threads like this always make me laugh...

It's the wizard, NOT the wand. nothing to see here. move along.

    • I think, in this instance, you're kind of missing the point.Nairn

in my opinion the main difference is reliability and security. I use macs for about 6 years and never had a single virus issue (no anti-virus software ever installed ).

Macs don't need the user to have extended experience to have things running smooth, that doesn't mean every mac user is computer knowledge stupid. On the other hand, with PC's if you're computer stupid then your machine won't last long until it clutters with evil everywhere

Surprisingly, it is techies, developers and tinkerers who use macs now more and more.
This is in huge part due to a full on certified unix running under the shiny hood and the ability to customize almost everything with command line if there isn't a pref pane for it.
Actually, most of the third party mac configuration tools available are just gui wrappers for terminal commands.

    • I must admit, I'm kind of jealous of some of the new toys that are coming out for Mac. I really should buy one.Nairn
    • Nairn, new ones will be coming out soon (at least the laptops).Jaline

    Reasons I don't have a Mac:

    - I can get more bang for my buck, hardware-wise, if I make my a Win PC.
    - In fact, "I can make my own PC". It's "my" machine, I can upgrade anything and everything when I want.
    - All my software is on Win, most of my fonts are Win.
    - I don't play as much as I used to, but all my games are on Win.
    - I want the OS to do as little as possible - I want to run programs without bloat, or graphic embellishment. Having fancy chrome, transitions and alt-tabbing is of no importance to me whatsoever.
    - When I used to use mac (and I'm sorry, I know this'll get flack) I recall them crashing more regularly and being more problemmatic than Win boxes. In particular, I found the technical side of things buried under too many layers of consumer-appeasing chrome. This was a while ago though, so I expect things have changed.

Reasons I'd consider getting a Mac:

    - There are some really l33t wee homebrew/shareware tools and programs coming out that appear to be for Mac only.
    - I get the impression that making such apps is a little bit easier on a mac, if only (as Rafalski hints) because there's the ocean of Linux/Unix geeks out there, open sourcing everything, making it easy for schlubbs like me to poke around with stuff.
    - I've already got a mac keyboard.

    • Yeah but aren't aesthetics worth something?? Aren't you a designer FFS?!Glitterati_Duane
    • My PC sits in quite a nice aluminium box, thank you. But it's under my desk, so no - I don't really care.Nairn
    • ..but I do love the thin aluminium Apple keyboard that sits on my desk here - she's teh gorjos.Nairn
    • "Aesthetics" is another tired argument. I do love the look of Macs, but not everyone cares. It's how they do work that matters more.Jaline

some times i see tv shows, where people have laptops, before, their laptops used to be pc, but i have noticed they are switching to macs.

my perception is, it makes them look like theyre more serious about their research and organized, makes them look smarter and openmind, and show they come up with cool stuff no body knows about, and mac is too simple to work with. and the fact that 90% of the people se an elegant computer on tv that in no way looks pc and they cant tell what it is, makes them stare at the computer, the apple, and then at the host, and see them as some one superior but aproachable.

these shows ive seen this are about politics and economics. these are guys wearing suits.

    • OR APPLE IS GIVING IT TO THEM SO THAT THEY GET MORE CUSTOMERS. It's called advertising.Jaline

This question is a bit absurd - and it's hard to escape the cliché of PC being nerd-ier (which it is), and macs being posh-ier (which they are) when you look at it superficially.

The reason why Macintosh is traditionally linked with graphic design lies on the fact high-end output software for print was first developed for Mac (especially typeface management) and most print-houses adopted Macintosh. So, it was natural that you would need a Mac to maximize your work-flow.

    That problem is no more.

As to web design and development, PC obviously has an egde because not only computers are more easily configurable but also they also allow more creativity, because the OS is less imposing and it "feels" more like a computer, as opposed to a gadget. This influences what you do and how you think about your work, believe it or not.

    • Yanks vs Brits thread was much more funnier. Stop being pc.

I am sick of my Mac at work and it's the fastest G5 available. Unless you have no experience with computers, Mac is not more intuitive. There are lots of annoying things on Mac, that personally, I just can't take anymore. I feel like I am crippled using a Mac.

Why would OSX assume I want to move a file when I drag and drop it to another location? Annoying
Why does no FTP software seem to work right on Mac?
Why does flash look like complete shite on Mac?
Why is it when I drag a file to a folder from FTP it renames it with a "1" on the end instead of replacing the freaking file like I wanted to do? wtf!
What is the point of the stupid widgets being completely separated from the rest of my Mac? makes no sense
Why does this damn beachball continue to spin constantly? I have 2- quad core processors and 8GB of RAM!
IF OSX is so sweet, why does Apple seem to have more updates than Windows?

There are so many other annoyances too.

Give me a PC....this thing is just clunky!

    • hahaha.. while OSX offers lots of annoyances, most on your list rely on you not having read the manualrafalski
    • manuals are for pc's, common nowlobstarr

"As to web design and development, PC obviously has an egde"
Don't think so, runs less web browsers and all the text editors are shit.

While I'm pressing cmd+R in Textmate to refresh my page in Safari, Firefox, Firefox PC, IE6, IE7 all at the same time.

    • what do you use for browser virtualization?rafalski
    • "runs less browsers" what?
You can run everything on Windows including Chrome and IE8, which you can't run on Mac.

    > Why would OSX assume I want to move a file when I drag and drop it to another location? Annoying

Windows assumes you're moving a file if both locations are on the same partition (ie. Desktop to MyDocuments). If it's 2 different partitions, it copies by default. I think Mac does exactly the same.
Learn modifier keys on both systems. Also, a '+' sign next to the icon means it's copied, lack of it - it's moved.

    > Why does no FTP software seem to work right on Mac?

Forklift does for me on the Mac what Total Commander does on Windows. There's plenty of ftp software.

    > Why does flash look like complete shite on Mac?

    Examples?

    > Why is it when I drag a file to a folder from FTP it renames it with a "1" on the end instead of replacing the freaking file like I wanted to do? wtf!

That's your ftp software's fault, presumably its settings. Mine asks what to do.

    > What is the point of the stupid widgets being completely separated from the rest of my Mac? makes no sense

Switch them to Developer Mode and have them on your desktop.

    > Why does this damn beachball continue to spin constantly? I have 2- quad core processors and 8GB of RAM!

Repair permissions!!!! ;) or something. Macs need maintenance as well.
I never would say OSX is faster than Windows though..

    > IF OSX is so sweet, why does Apple seem to have more updates than Windows?

Even if true, this only means they keep on improving it.

    > There are so many other annoyances too.

    True that!

    • I have never repaired permissions before but I probably should. Do I need to back things up first?Jaline
    • I never backup for that.. But it's obviously safer to backup when not sure if you should.rafalski
    • I know about holding the "option" key and others, but it's just annoying.designbot

i used to be the only one in the agency that used a pc, i thought i was making a statement...

    however that fell through.

imagine all your files changing baselines and constantly converting fonts into pc fonts... also changing all the animations within a flash file... it got annoying!

    • Aye, working between Mac and PC is a fucking arse, especially where fonts are concerned.Nairn
    • there are differences in flash files, annoying shit (including font issues or not)rafalski
    • yeah flash pc/mac sucks for the most part. except if you have the fonts ready.Llyod

the last mac I worked on was a communal machine at ddb. the thing sucked major balls. the tech nerds had to run disk warrior to recover my work.
