What Michael Jordan can teach us about politics
In the recent months of nasty debates over the size and role of government, we've heard words like "capitalism" and "socialism" thrown around so much that they've almost completely lost their original meanings. As if any given policy is either strictly one or the other.
Well, if we're going to over-simplify things, how about the idea that a lot of politics comes down to "competition" and "collaboration." The concept of a free market is driven by primarily by competition, which can be a very effective means for business and innovation. The more liberal policies are driven by collaboration, knowing that what's good for society as a whole is good for all of the people within that society.
Michael Jordan was a fierce competitor who was known mostly for his scoring ability. But he also knew when to pass the ball, because he certainly couldn't win championships alone. As anyone in team sports will tell you, both competition and collaboration have their merits. Focusing too much on one and not the other can only lead to defeat.

RE: Grayson's statement. Huh. A congress person saying the other party's plan will kill people. Shocking!..or not so much...
Take Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.), who said in July: "Last week, Democrats released a health care bill which essentially said to America's seniors: drop dead."
Or Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), a doctor, who reviewed the public health insurance option in July and diagnosed that it is "gonna kill people."
Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), not one to pull punches, suggested on the House floor that Congress "make sure we bring down the cost of health care for all Americans and that ensures affordable access for all Americans and is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government."
July was a busy time for House floor death sentences. Also that month, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), noted: "One in five people have to die because they went to socialized medicine...I would hate to think that among five women, one of 'em is gonna die because we go to socialized care."
Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) had a similar assessment. "They're going to save money by rationing care, getting you in a long line. Places like Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. People die when they're in line," he said on the House floor in July.
So, when a Republican says the democratic plan is to kill old people and shit, that's OK. But when a democrat says it? Oh shit time to break out the badly spelled signs, mullet wigs and 'murican flag t-shirts and have a hissy fit in the streets.
- You nailed it! I hope all the Repubs get voted out!!DCDesigns
- Oh, to the contrary my friend, to the CONTRARY. You see, D's have all the power and are fucking it away. Voters won't take too kindly in 2010.********

Furthermore, when a congress person does something unprecedented in all of American history - say heckling a president during an address to congress by yelling out "You lie!", well, the Republicans didn't get on board with the resolution condemning it, saying, it was "politics" and saying we should "move on".
But they want a resolution against Grayson IMMEDIATELY.
Yup. Just like a two year old. What you want? Don't give a fuck. What we want? GIMME NOW OR I WILL SCREAM! WAAAAAAHHH!
- and then they'll call you a "homo" and a "fag"TheBlueOne

I no longer think that its local politics that the usa needs more of but more specifically less 'politics of personality' and partisan poltics and more politics of issues. Real issues not the fucking playground bullshit yall are so fond of these days.
- sadly most of it is it's driven by the news-o-tainment media.TheBlueOne
- the 'you lie ' comment was designed to play straight into the playground BS and it worked in a big wayzman
- See the US used to be a hardcore political country but its gone soft and pathetic.zman

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has been quietly assembling the blueprint of a presidential campaign and will announce Thursday the support of a group of high-level political strategists and donors, complemented by a handful of top new media consultants, POLITICO has learned.
Pawlenty, under the radar of D.C.’s political community, has locked up some of the key operatives who engineered then-President George W. Bush’s reelection campaign — a significant feat for a little-known Midwestern politician.

What I don't get is why people buy into this Republican idea of letting people buy insurance across state lines. Like that would be good for the consumer? It's just a transparent way to let insurance companies relocate to the state with the most lenient laws regulating them.
Anyone who has a credit card knows what I'm talking about. The bill always comes from one of three states - because those are the places that let companies jack up their rates as high as possible.

- wouldnt state lines draw more competition instead of the 4-5 companies competing in each state. think drugs and territory********
- if everyone stays with "jacked up" rates then its jsut whatever. but one of those comapneis will see by lowering prices bigger market share and econ takes the rest********
- bigger market share... pretty common sense. auto insurance... come on really********
- but anyways insurance will be gone in the next 20 years when tech makes genetic mapping cheaper.********
- be left to the individual to plan and prepare for his hereditary shiz********
- when will people take responsibility for the hand theyre dealt.********
- Why should someone be forced to drive to another state to get the affordable care that they need?Josev
