boy the news just keeps getting more and more predictable every day...

"Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a resolution apologizing to African-Americans for the wrongs of slavery.

The nonbinding resolution sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, is similar to a House resolution adopted last year that acknowledged the wrongs of slavery but offered no reparations. The House will have to vote on the issue again because the composition of that chamber changed after last November's elections.

The resolution was approved on a voice vote.

Because it is nonbinding, it does not have to be forwarded to the president for his signature.

Several states have passed similar resolutions, but the House resolution was the first time a branch of the federal government did so."

Ah, one can always trust Fox news to be the mouthpiece for the neocons. You see, Bolivia has the world's largest supply of lithium, which, it has now become clear will underlay massive use in future battery and other energy needs. And, well, Bolivia is apparently overflowing with one or two, or maybe tens of, maybe Islamic extremists. Maybe. So therefore it is in the US interests to invade Bolivia and put an end to it's use as a Iran-sponsored safe haven for islamic terrorism. Bolivia.

    Fox:

"There are only 1,000 Muslims in Bolivia, a country of 9.7 million people, but the connection between some of the community’s religious leaders and Iran — as well as with fundamentalist factions in the Palestinian territories — has U.S. officials and terror experts keeping a watchful eye on them. The report revealed a number of Muslim organizations in Bolivia whose leaders have publicly denounced U.S. foreign policy and have direct associations with extremists in the Middle East."

Come on guys...really? A tiny landlocked, 100% Christian country is a "hotbed of islamic extremism"?

    • 'watchful eye' does not equal 'invade.' You're as sensational as Fox these days TBO.tommyo

U.S. Military Set to Intercept North Korean Ship Suspected of Proliferating Missiles, Nukes

@TommyO and others of the libertarian bent: So, you guys are always complaining about how Government is seeking to control how one lives one's life, (for example, whether one has to wear underwear at work or not )and seem to always say that private enterprise is the way. So, what say you to this article in the WSJ about Safeway enforcing bahavior modifications on it's employees to cut healthcare costs. What's the difference between government not allowing soda in schools versus your employer telling you it's in your best interest to not eat that cupcake and eat a carrot instead?

"Safeway's plan capitalizes on two key insights gained in 2005. The first is that 70% of all health-care costs are the direct result of behavior. The second insight, which is well understood by the providers of health care, is that 74% of all costs are confined to four chronic conditions (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity). Furthermore, 80% of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is preventable, 60% of cancers are preventable, and more than 90% of obesity is preventable....As with most employers, Safeway's employees pay a portion of their own health care through premiums, co-pays and deductibles. The big difference between Safeway and most employers is that we have pronounced differences in premiums that reflect each covered member's behaviors. Our plan utilizes a provision in the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that permits employers to differentiate premiums based on behaviors. Currently we are focused on tobacco usage, healthy weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels."

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB…

So what's the difference between Government telling you not to smoke and not to eat that hamburger for your own health versus Private enterprise enforcing the same to save themselves some bucks, on principle?

    • choice is the difference,BattleAxe
    • i can quit working at Safeway , much easier than moving to another countryBattleAxe

The difference is that you can quit working at Safeway, you can't quit living under your government.

    Riddle me this:

What the fuck is wrong with letting companies and individuals decide their level of hygiene?

If you, as the employee step outside the accepted dress code for the company you work for then you should be talked to, if you don't correct it, you should be written up, if you don't correct it then obviously you and the company aren't a good fit and you move on either voluntarily or forced by management .. you know, the system that's been in place for hundreds of years. Why do you feel that it's governments position to regulate a standard for every person within every company? Way too Orwellian.

    • In principle, what's the fucking difference?TheBlueOne
    • Individuality, freedom of choice.. fucking pick one. Maybe you'd like it if gov started deciding what kind of pastries you can sell?tommyo
    • Because obviously the people who live and operate in Brooksville, Florida aren't responsible enough to maketommyo
    • clothing and hygiene decisions on their own. Their local gov must now make these sorts of decisions. ffstommyo
  • TheBlueOne0

"the system that's been in place for hundreds of years."

Which system is this? If you're going to tell me altruistic corporate rule has been the law of the land for hundreds of years I want to know the location of the planet you are living on.

  • lowimpakt0

toomyo - the reason is because you can't assume that everyone will operate to your standards.

    • That's for the business and the individuals to come to terms with.tommyo
  • tommyo0

TBO - the system I'm referring to is the one where who ever gives you money for your services sets the expectations of your actions. If you sell me sick goats, I stop employing you as my goat vendor.

lowimpakt - So the Gov can't assume that people will operate to THEIR standards in YOUR business now? Are you high? If I run a strip club, how does this effect me? If I run a bar how does this effect me? If I'm employed and cotton chafes my ballsack, I can be force ably fired even though my line of work is sitting at a cubicle? ffs I really don't even see how you guys defend this policy. Gov has no right to determine these sorts of things. None. Zero. I'm going to guess that none of you have business experience.

  • TheBlueOne0

"the one where who ever gives you money for your services sets the expectations of your actions." So you're pro-slavery then?

  • tommyo0

    TBO,

Did my example imply some sort of forced serfdom? Or are you somehow hinting that I'd be wrong in firing you as my goat vendor for selling me sick goats?

    • < Would you buy a sick goat from this man?ukit
  • TheBlueOne0

So, first you say "the one where who ever gives you money for your services sets the expectations of your actions." And then you say "Gov has no right to determine these sorts of things." Yet the article about what you can wear on the job was for government employees, so what's the fucki\ng problem? You want to collect garbage for the city or teach and the government signs your paycheck? Then wear fucking underwear. If it chafes, well, you can quit and work for safeway who won't let you eat a cupcake, because that'll raise their insurance premiums.

Again. In principle, what's the fucking difference.

    • I actually read the article as the whole town is enforced with this dress code. Makes little difference though, look at thetommyo
    • cities in California who banned smoking throughout. Same bullshit.tommyo
  • tommyo0

Btw, it's simply the basics of a 'free market.' If I don't like what you sell me, I find another vendor. You know, that pesky anti-monopoly stuff and all.. kinda encourages that we have more than one goat vendor available at all times.

    • Ah, the free market fairy.TheBlueOne
    • I'd rather have a free market fairy than swing from the balls of big government. At least my deity offers freedom of choice.tommyo
