OK zenmasterfoo lemme explain my thinking on this
Let's say you are racing someone. Before every run around the track you bribe the referee to come with baseball bat and break their knees. You are running, the other guy is kind of stumbling along.
Then after a few rounds you say, OK, I realize this is unfair, I'm not going to kneecap you anymore. The guy, who at this point can barely walk, is now free to race me on equal terms. Fair?

dr bombay - do you ever get tired of being right all the time? (in your own mind of course) you kinda remind me of a cock (rooster). walking around with your chest out (or in this case typing at your computer with your chest out, nose up in the air) strutting around like you're the biggest cock in the hen house. it's true on a number of levels, none of which have to do with the size, or lack thereof, of your manhood.
kaonashi - wow, spoken like a true asshole
getrefresh - i like that. set them up with the left and knock them out with the right, but, what is your argument again? you lost me.
dr bombay - you're white right? why do you always talk like you're not? "white people white people white people..." it just crosses me as being funny.
ponyboy - i have a hard time reading your posts.

ukit, I'm not sure I see that illustration as completely accurate. In your estimation, at what point do you even the playing ground? At what point do you start thinking everyone's voice, no matter how varied or wrong, should be heard? To me it's a simple issue of communicating with respect. When you pin one person or group or culture down, just on pretext that it was done to them once, it's still wrong. And more to the point, it perpetuates the same metaphor you just pointed out, but this time on another group, culture, person. Again, hypocrisy.

- this discussions isn't about that at all. If you've interpreted it that way, let me clarify. It's about representing all people equally.zenmasterfoo

Sure, I mean, there are no easy answers.
Where I take issue with the conservative argument is that you can reboot from a blank slate when that is clearly not the case. What happened in the past in terms of slavery, segregation does have an impact today.
It's also deeply ironic that many conservatives (not you) now take the tact that they want everyone to be colorblind when the modern Republican party is pretty much built on the idea of playing off the racism of Southern whites.
It's not like they have always been champions of color blind equality, more like the philosophy has evolved from "minorities are inferior" to "minorities should have no special privileges, everyone is equal." Kinda makes you suspicious as to what the real motive is there.

There never has been an easy answer. Regardless of what certain groups that support the Republican party want to believe, their antiquated voice of racist, one-sided rhetoric, is dead. Most conservatives, even those in the south don't listen to that and can't relate to it at all.
What, for me is most important is the idea that all men, differing in religious, political, economic and racial backgrounds and viewpoints can continue to make this country a great place to live. We take our history as a point of reference to what our future should be.

Racism in America is a deep. deep issue. The high ideals of the Declaration of Independence, i.e. "all men are created equal" as being a self-evident truth, has always served as an abrasive in our politics. The Founders KNEW that slavery would be THE issue that could keep all the States from ratifying the Constitution, it was an issue that lead to odd policy choices, fist fights on the Congressional floor, and ultimately to the Civil War. It was an issue that wasn't solved by that war sadly, and it's effects are still felt today. It is impossible to imagine an America without the effects of racism and slavery, nor, despite the terrible history of it, would I want to. As ideals go, striving to create a society where all men are considered equal (at least in the arena of the Law) is a pretty monumental thing in the history of the world, and could never, ever run smooth. The reward is in the struggle for each American generation to define that problem for themselves. Sometimes our demons make us as much of who we are as our Angels do, no?
We ignore the issue at our peril, but we should also be wary of those who wish to exploit the sentiments of it for any political cause, from either party, that does not point towards the ideal of a just equality.

on the bright side, while the dollar tumbled to 79.30 cents today!!, silver shot up like 63 cents and gold is about to kiss 1k... for those who invested in some precious metal last year like I did, this should be a little glimmer of hope in our already ailing dumb-o-cracy.
Giethners gonna do some ass kissing in China next week and probably unload (similiar to Nixon) the rest of our public lands as deposit for China's investment in US debt... that's right folks in a written agreement with China should the United States government default on financial obligations, public land, factories and even entire cities will be taken by the Communist Government of China!
