Sotomayor quote:
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”- probably very true********
- yup. A woman from the bronx has a bit more empathy than a peckerwood from the burbs :DDrBombay

"Would a Hispanic women make better decisions than a white male? LOL "
Look, this is obviously how they're framing this quote in crazy wingnut land, but that's not what she was saying at all. She was discussing how her personal experience would effect her ability to see the general context in particular kinds of cases.
Exact quote: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life...". She was specifically discussing the importance of judicial diversity in determining race and sex discrimination cases.
Alito was asked the very same question, and Clarance Thomas said EXACTLY the same thing when asked, that his experience as a black man in America would add to the knowledge he would draw on in certain legal decisions. But oh yeah, that's ok for them to say that shit because they're, you know, Republicans.
During his Supreme Court confirmation hearings, responding to Sen. Herb Kohl's (D-WI) question, "I'd like to ask you why you want this job?" Thomas stated in part: "I believe, Senator, that I can make a contribution, that I can bring something different to the Court, that I can walk in the shoes of the people who are affected by what the Court does."
So, a black man makes better decisions than a white man, obviously, because he walked in different shoes. Judge Thomas said it.
Fuck, what's with you people and your teapot tempests?

Take the race out of it, bunch of bullshit. I don't know why you are defending such a stupid statement. She may or may not have meant it one way or the other, but she should have worded it differently.
Sure it's being blown way out of proportion by the repub talking heads, but lets not create a double standard. No white person could get away with such a statement in regards to a minority group.
My main point, it has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with life experience. So qualify your statement with that...not "I would hope that a wise Latina women..."
- DrBombay0
It's funny when white people feel left out because they can't pull the race card.
- designbot0
The race card get's old Dr.B. I am probably as hypersensitive to race as anyone ( I am married to someone who happens to be Hispanic/Chinese/Hawaiian) but I think we are doing a major disservice to everyone including minorities when we give special treatment to anyone based on the color of their skin. Or special privileges (like, since your a minority, it's okay for you to say XYZ, but not a non-minority)
It's a touchy subject for sure.
- You can't legislate thought.DrBombay
- what do you mean by that?designbot
- (like, since your a minority, it's okay for you to say XYZ, but not a non-minority)DrBombay
- That's just the way it is.DrBombay
- yes your right. But I don't think it hurts to stand up for such things.designbot
- To me, it just makes you look like a whiney white guy. It's like wearing a purple suit, white people just can't pull it off.DrBombay
- BattleAxe0
we just need more diverse representation across all boards in government,
nothing wrong with that

"To me, it just makes you look like a whiney white guy. It's like wearing a purple suit, white people just can't pull it off."
-- DrBombayDr, That sure is a racist thing to say, if I ever heard one.
- purple suits look bad on everyone.zenmasterfoo

Considering whites wouldn't let other certain races ride the same bus, go to the same school or drink from the same water fountain just a few decades ago, I think maybe we can cut minorities some slack?
- not at all. it leaves the door open for future abuse.zenmasterfoo

PonyBoy, aka Kevin Ross, is probably the most spineless, consistently Republican mouth-piece this site has ever seen.
Turn off Limbaugh and get out of Arizona for once in your miserable life, Kevin.
- zenmasterfoo0
Ukit, every race has been this way towards another at one time in history. You can't give a pass to anyone and retain any kind of moral high ground. It's hypocrisy. Not to mention a bad way of avoiding the topic. Just because a white man or woman decids to talk about something being racist in origin does not disallow them from having a valid point. I actually hate counter arguments like this. It's akin to the "Dude, lighten up" approach. It's weak and the worst method of winning an argument.
- ukit0
Yeah, I dunno. I think there are certain historical and social realities that need to be taken into account.
This is similar to the argument for/ against affirmation action.
You have a government that actively oppressed certain parts of the population, legally said they were worth less than a white person. These people can only take the shitty jobs at the bottom of society. So all the wealth and resources are in the hands of the white community.
Now the government says, OK, we'll end discrimination, you're all equal now. And in the eyes of the law they are, but not in terms of equal opportunity necessarily.
- zenmasterfoo0
I understand your desire to see some kind of reciprocity, but it doesn't make it right. What you in effect do is reverse discriminate. You silence a portion of the populace based on historical references that may not be applicable to the voice nor to the message. It favors one or certain minority viewpoints while leaving the whole picture, in effect, masked from people's periphery.
- PonyBoy0
dear kaonashi,
there you go again calling me out - I have no clue who you are nor I have ever even spoken to you - before speaking up... at least pick a topic to attack me with.

And if some of what I say is in agreement w/Rush... so be it... is that supposed to hurt my feelings?
Folks on the left in this country (and others) seem to think they 'gotcha' by immediately attaching you to some tit on the radio...
... again, kaonashi - grab a topic... let's have it...
