hmmmm, I really don't know any other way to put this but we will never be victorious against the Taliban. I really don't understand how our leaders can be so blind and know when to stop.
If history has taught us anything, it is that you can not stop a Tsunami that has been raging for thousands of years. It may subside from time to time but it will always come back around. There is too much rage, patience and faith for us to stop it.
But it seems that a country that has only been around for 234 years thinks it can change the world in a day, have a KFC on every corner and Billy Graham on the tube.
That war is futile.
- Don't underestimate the power of KFC. No one can resist it.zenmasterfoo
- hahaha! He forgets Rev War, Civil War, WW I/II etc. And the US can't beat the TAAL-EE-BAAN (Obama translation)? Laughable.********

Interesting article regarding the CA budget situation...
http://www.latimes.com/news/opin…
"California has two budgets. One is passed by lawmakers. The other is improvised at the ballot box. The state's Constitution requires that the budget put together in Sacramento at least pretend to be balanced. The spending that voters enact operates under no such discipline. We do what we please.
And what usually pleases us is to add billions in spending obligations without providing any revenue to pay for them. Over the last decade, voters have passed bonds and programs, as well as shifted general tax revenue to transportation, that will cost the general fund -- when all the bonds are sold -- about $9.5 billion in debt service and spending a year, according to estimates by the Legislative Analyst's Office. That's equivalent to 9% of the current general fund,or about the total cost of all of today's state social service programs."
- I said in a note on last page, CA politics suck. They are the worst of both worlds.TheBlueOne
- *happy to live in tax and spend NYC. Costs of living can be ridiculous, but at least you see what you pat for. Most of the time.TheBlueOne
- time.TheBlueOne
- You may be one of the last few to be sincerely happy about NYC's situation. Don't fib now.********

Interesting take on the GOP Pelosi strategy and how it might very well backfire:

TBO: From that article you sent.
"Obama wanted to avoid a backward-looking focus on torture in part because it distracted from his legislative agenda. "
That part doesn't ring true for me. If the Obama administration really wanted to avoid a backward looking focus on torture, the photo back and forth we've seen in the news lately wold never have happened. In all honesty it almost seemed like they instigated this then stepped aside and took no ownership over it.
- I wouldn't put it past them. But I think it was more an actual misstep that they might end up milking for political gain.TheBlueOne
- I tend to think political missteps only come in the form of porn or a mistress.zenmasterfoo
- oh and verbal dunnage. did I say porn? porn.zenmasterfoo

New CAFE standards driven by "politics and fear", says the Rs, concerning Obama's recent "National" CAFE Standards announcement... And decision may seriously, and adversely affect the economy, manufacturing, auto safety & sales, etc.
I agree.
P.s. Better hope to hell that the cost of oil skyrockets for crying out loud, or else, FAIL.

- Ha. If I didn't have a new baby on the way, I'd buy a Smart Car for sure. Perfect for NYC parkingTheBlueOne

^^to add to that (getRefresh's comment on the CAFE standards)... these cafe standards are going to kill the auto industry for the first few years (which I think is also the point - perhaps force a few more auto companies into bankruptcy and then amazingly hand over more than 50% ownership to the UAA... tehehe)...
... how will they kill the industry? You're forcing immediate new technology which 'does not exist'... imagine the engineering costs - then re-imagine those costs being lumped on you... the consumer.
Now I'm not saying I disagree w/forcing change - these are all good changes for the human race on whole (better for everyone's lungs and less oil is SUPPOSEDLY going to be used)... it's just I don't think the immediate forced change can be sustained / paid for by automakers in their existing state - not w/out a lovely lil subsidy from Uncle Obama... which of course will lead to more gov. run business which is... ... bullshit. ;)
- whats worse is that new technology does exist but no one will ever admit itlazerbass

Those "smart" cars crack me up, sorry but if that's the best we can do we are seriously screwed.
Obviously a tiny car with a tiny engine is going to get good gas mileage. How about making a car that is appealing to people who are not midgets and are not employed by Barnum and Bailey.
- Yep, I don't think TBO would even fit in that car. Hahaha!********
- well he might make an exception and squeeze in since it say's "fuck getrefresh" on the side...hahadesignbot
- nothing against you btw, you all just seem to be arch enemies :)designbot
- In california would I want one? Hell no. In nyc? Sure.TheBlueOne
- actually my wife and I had this very conversation the other night...living downtown in a big city, they might actually be kind of cool.designbot

the electric cars out ther now don't represent whats possible they made to make everyone think electric cars are shit and have to be 2 feet big. Ask NASA, there's super powerful fuel cells out there that last months.and can make anything as big as they want go as fast they want.

Yeah God forbid the unions had any power...
We all know it's the worker that's been holding down the Man all these years.
- PonyBoy0
^^w/out the man... the workers would have nothing to work on...
... w/out original thinkers... the workers would have nothing to work on...
... w/out PRIVATE BUSINESS... the workers would nothing to work on...
... you keep fucking w/private biz... what will the workers have to work on?
- ukit0
All I saying is...when I look around, I don't see the interests of workers over represented...maybe you do?
- what about the burgeoning benefits packages most UAE workers get. japanese car man. co.s don't have that to deal with.zenmasterfoo
- japanese car companies also don't pay for workers' insurance. so are you for national health care?DrBombay
- lazerbass0
they work on the man's shit but get paid what they deserve thanks to unions (sometimes). you should see what the economy looks like when there isn't any unions to support workers. You get multi billion dollar companies trampling through communities with no responsibilty, soak up government checks and run somewhere else leaving everyone poor and unemployed. Happens everywhere, I should know.

"these cafe standards are going to kill the auto industry for the first few years "
*looks at headlines
"Chrysler in Banruptcy"
"GM heading towards Bankruptcy"
"Total Auto Sales Down Everywhere"
Yup. Yeah. This will kill this vibrant American industry for sure.
- kick 'the man' when he's down then?
:DPonyBoy - Sure. What's good for GM is good for America, right? :)TheBlueOne
- lol... umm...
... let's just play some metal and get stoned... whattaya say? :DPonyBoy
- kick 'the man' when he's down then?
- johndiggity0
obama basically subverted the law of contract by paying out union workers before actual chrysler debt holders. this was done because he had garnered political and monetary support from the uaw while campaigning. it's all a game of favors, not about what is actually best for the industry, the economy, or the country.
- Yeah, it breaks my heart to see unions getting a seat at the table instead of oil companies and the military...horribleukit
- it's just funny, he campaigned on change, and he simply changes the players not the game.johndiggity
- yeah but you didnt bitch about it when bush was doing it...DrBombay
- If you didnt think unions were going to get a place at the table with a democrat, I dunno man.DrBombay
- ukit0
Think about the difference between America and the workforce of a 3rd world country where kids are working in factories for pennies a day.
Is the difference that we are more "free market" than them? Hell no, the difference is that we have unions and government regulations that help ensure a higher standard of living.
- PonyBoy0
the workers interests are not being represented here, ukit!... if the company isn't turning a profit... if the company is in bankruptcy... if the company can't afford to exist...
... how are the worker's interests being represented?
Workers get paid for 'working'!... right? If there's nothing to work on - how are their interests being represented?
