Tommy - I think when most people talk about "evil corporations" they tend to mean the some of the ones on this list and not, say, a regional sandwich franchise that employs 800 people:

Evil is in the scaling, not the form.

No I understand that completely. But I think my point is more that most people seem to lump 'those guys' with the honest business owners and capitalists who've made their money through hard work and honest enterprises. It's easy to become skeptical of the whole machine when some of the more visible icons of industry abuse the system. I wasn't comparing the two as much as offering insight into the type of company that I feel exemplifies what is amazingly beneficial for all when a corporation works correctly.

Something that's important to understand about the government spending - it's not really accurate to lump actions taken by the Fed and FDIC together with those taken by the Treasury.
Only the Treasury expenditures are actually added to the national debt.

^ May I ask a simple question? Did Obama's campaign platform run on the promise of binge spending, or, did I miss something there?
- KwesiJ0
tommy i don't people do lump mid sized honest business in with illegal/immoral large scale corporate activities you just want them to so you can have something to say about it
- ukit0
Obama always ran on the platform of health care reform, energy reform, yes.
When you say binge spending I think you are looking at it the wrong way. Would it be binge spending to spend money to repair your car if the battery was crapping out? Would it have been binging for the government to spend more on the levies around New Orleans?
- sort of a priorities thing. if you're broke then maybe the car battery can wait...there's nothing nessecary about every cost.KwesiJ
- ...cost. The levy example is redundant considering they were under funded and managed for years...dare i say to create the problem so it can be solved with more spendingKwesiJ

tommyo - I'm with BlueOne - I wouldn't lump a family run business (especially one that is investing in the social capital of the communities in which it operates) in with a corporation as most people percieve it. I find the "evil corporation" moniker unhelpful because there is good business and there is bad business.
You can quickly connect the need to run a business with the associated value of responsibility. This is simply not the case in many big businesses - there is massive disconnect with promoted values and actual impacts on society/employees/environment etc.
In my job I work directly with policy makers, businesses (we're mostly interested in supporting small businesses e.g. less than 250 employees), some NGO's and educators so I get to see the issues from all sides.

^^ It makes no sense to spend $20,000-$40,000 on a new car, if your current car needs some repairs, say, totaling $2500 (+/-).
In other words, the government is recklessly spending money because they "can", not because they have any idea of what is actually broken, thus worth fixing. They are also not practicing prudent spending in any form, IMO.

Read this and you will quickly see why we need health care reform
http://www.nchc.org/facts/cost.s…
In 2008, total national health expenditures were expected to rise 6.9 percent -- two times the rate of inflation.1 Total spending was $2.4 TRILLION in 2007, or $7900 per person1. Total health care spending represented 17 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
U.S. health care spending is expected to increase at similar levels for the next decade reaching $4.3 TRILLION in 2017, or 20 percent of GDP.
Health care spending is 4.3 times the amount spent on national defense.
Although nearly 46 million Americans are uninsured, the United States spends more on health care than other industrialized nations, and those countries provide health insurance to all their citizens.
Health care spending accounted for 10.9 percent of the GDP in Switzerland, 10.7 percent in Germany, 9.7 percent in Canada and 9.5 percent in France, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Seriously, I come home and turn on CNN here in primetime, one of the major news organizations in the world, and it has this tool on here, Lou Dobbs, who looks like he orgasms everytime he gets to say "Is Obama heading us towards totalitarin socilaism? How extreme will Obama get?" and he's said it ten times in five minutes.
Funny, I don't remember him saying this shit when it was revealed Bush had a huge electronic eavesdropping program that would've given the Stasi a hardon.
Is this serious news? Really? Is it? Or is this all fear mongering propaganda? Look, fine I get it, you're concerned about what Obama's doing. Fair enough. Make a real fucking argument without this dog whistle fear mongering.
Jesus christ, if you think this is totalitarinism or socialism... god..fucking clueless...
- You're insane dude. You live in the states and you're saying that? You're a sheep, research the facts and the people********
- Yes, it seems the news is nothing but propoganda these days. In fact, I completely stopped watching tv news...I get updated from various net sources now.designbot
- get most my info from various web sources. The problem of course, is that everyone is biased. There is no completely subjective resource.designbot
- subjective source. So I find it best to get a balance of both sides.designbot

I just want to to tell all the americans here that are voting for a social, totalitarian society because then you think it will be fair for everyone, I challenge you to look at any country in this whole world and you name one country that has been successful for its government and people under that style?
You creative people are so stupid when it comes to business matters. You don't even know what's good or bad nor how it affects you. 75% of you are true followers and the other 20% watch rachel maddow. Half of you idiots can't even research the facts, sure healthcare needs reform and the financial markets but by no means does that mean government control, they can't even make money with the post office or amtrak and you want them to run your healthcare, banks, auto industry and most importantly your lives? Not to mention the bailout of the newspapers or electricity?
That is absolutely insane? Obama is going to implement a cap and trade tax that will make energy prices sky rocket and you cheer for that? That is unbelievable. Look up the cap and trade, don't just attack me. I challenge ever American to quit being a pussy and either stand up for what this country was founded on or get the hell out.
- so, you're just a different colored sheep then?TheBlueOne
- "you creative people" bahahKwesiJ
- Energy prices are estimated to go up about 10 cents/day/person. Not exactly skyrocketing.joeth
- Small price to pay to stop climate change. The economy will get better. Climate change is irreversible.joeth
- I'm with Hurley. The rest of you are quite misinformed. Consumer energy prices WILL skyrocket under can & trade. Get a clue please.********
- ... that was "cap & trade". Under this plan, we will ALL be additional taxes on a myriad of things.********
- ... and by the way, global warming is still NOT a scientific fact.********
- lol @ 'small price to pay to stop climate change.' eesh you liberals sometimes my lordy.tommyo
- You're right. Fuck the planet. Fuck science. Fuck the next generations. FREEDOM... YAY!!joeth
- Btw, most of the new green initiatives will SAVE money and create JOBS. So fuck you all for not seeing the bigger picture.joeth
- Sorry I was a tad drunk when I posted that. You're right though, I'd rather err on the side of caution.tommyo
- No prob. I just get sick of people always believing we can have it all... Cheap everything, no rules, etc.joeth
- I agree. It's just that I find it a tad arrogant to think we're the only cause. But again, I'd rather we use and abuse Mothertommyo
- Nature a lot less than we do. It's better for everyone regardless of whether it's causing the warming or not.tommyo
- Everything the Fed does , does not = Final Word , look up Tenth AmendmentBattleAxe
- I'm not 100% convinced either, but yeah.. err on caution. We have a lot of 'green' catching up to do after Bush.joeth
- KwesiJ0
whats fucking stupid when you lump totalitarianism with socialism...the fact of the matter is practically every real socialist DEMOCRACY in the world is thriving and has a buffer between the global economy collaps and its people.

The Merrill bonuses were 22 times larger than those paid by AIG ($3,620 million versus $165 million). They were also very large relative to the TARP monies allocated to Merrill. The Merrill bonuses were the equivalent of 36.2% of TARP monies Treasury allocated to Merrill and awarded to BOA after their merger. The bonuses, awarded mostly as cash, were made only to top management at Merrill. To be eligible for the bonuses, Merrill employees had to have a salary of at least $300,000 and attained the title of Vice President or higher.

Hurley - in your head, how do you square up consistently cheap prices for oil when oil is a market-traded non-renewable resource?
- TheBlueOne0
I like when you look at the other posts Hurley has done here and one is about "not rioting because that's what they want!", another is about the Illuminati and a third is about how Rush Limbaugh is right and then he expects to make some sort of rambling, non-sensical half-assed political screed and thinks he's somehow a lone voice in a vast wasteland of stupid creative sheeple.
