"What will actually change if Obama wins?" - Exactly. I know I posted this before but I think it's worth a watch if some of you haven't seen it. Really good video series by John Stossel:
This is just part 1 of a 6 part series.

What will change if Obama wins? Lots actually. What I think will actually happen:
We will begin to withdraw from Iraq, pursue diplomacy with Iran, 3 more liberal Supreme Court Justices instead of a Supreme Court composed entirely of conservatives, repeal of the Bush tax cuts, unions given more power, net neutrality preserved, probably major infrastructure investments, attempt at universal health care.
Doesn't mean I think the Dems are perfect or free from corruption and I have my doubts whether they will really roll back some of the violations in terms of civil rights from the Bush years. But having control of both houses of Congress and the White House means they will actually be able to get a lot done.

Throughout the rest of the report, Stossel's method is simple: documentexamples of government waste and neglect, and demonstrate how privatized,market-based solutions are more efficient.
Glaringly absent from Stossel's report is any mention of one of the biggestregulation-related stories of the year-- California's deregulation-inducedenergy crisis. Citizens who live in California towns with publicly ownedutilities have been largely unaffected by the rolling blackouts and soaringrates that have crippled the rest of the state. Stossel's selectiveattention to the details is nothing new-- a few years ago, two producersquit working with him after being pressured to ignore research findings thatundermined Stossel's claims (Extra! Update, 6/94).
Stossel's examples sometimes border on the absurd, like his suggestion toalleviate delays at airports: "Look at the sky. Even over an airport, there's lots of room. Why can't they fly more planes in this empty space?"At one point, he laments that a woman running a private charity providingfood to the needy was forced to abide by health codes in her kitchen.Protecting people from food-borne illnesses may sound reasonable, but not toStossel, who complains that the government "wouldn't leave her alone."
Stossel closes with these thoughts: "As Thomas Jefferson warned, the naturalprogress of things is for government to gain and liberty to yield. Thechoice is up to you." For viewers of ABC News, however, there's very littlechoice: Stossel's reports are often distorted, one-sided attacks from aright-wing libertarian perspective. Stossel himself does not claim to bebalanced: In an ABCNews.com on-line chat (1/29/01), Stossel responded toviewer questions with comments like "I clearly do have a point of view" and"I also admit my report was one-sided."

Also, let's face it, Obama's charisma and the idea of the first black president will probably help the image and brand of the U.S. quite a bit. McCain would be the face of a dying nation.

Nobody wants to comment on the David Rockefeller qoute?
"For more than a century ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents such as my encounter with Castro to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure — one world, if you will. If that's the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it."

I saw a good chunk of that Stossel report. He can be pretty interesting, and I appreciate that there are people like him questioning gov't action. But he kept going on about that "spontaneous order." It works great for fish and birds and shit, but the difference between humans and animals is that we have the ability to get greedy and advantage of the system.
Plus, these systems don't just always just happen on their own. To use his ice skating example... Somebody had to build the rink. Somebody has to drive the Zamboni around and put up cones for people to follow. Somebody has to rent out skates. And if some jackass kid starts knocking people over for the fun of it, I'm sure somebody will be there to kick him out. People do need to be regulated to some degree or else greed and corruption will always take over. That's my opinion anyway.

The Border Patrol made 723,825 apprehensions in Federal fiscal year 2008, which ended in September. The number is down 18 percent from the previous year and down 39 percent from in 2005. This is likely due to increased border deterrence – over 17,600 agents now patrol the borders – and fewer aliens making the illegal trek knowing jobs are not waiting in favored industries on the other end.- or less gasoline for the hummers********

Here's an interesting take from a conservative blog on Obama and the Israeli election:
http://www.powerlineblog.com/arc…
It's official -- Israel will hold elections early next year, after which a new government will be formed. The discredited Ehud Olmert will remain prime minister until then.
The election figures to be a knock down, drag out battle between Kadima's Tzipi Livni and Likud's Binyamin Netanyahu, a former prime minister. Ehud Barak, also a former prime minister, will be the Labor candidate, but it is thought that he has no chance of winning.
Livni and Netanyahu are considered evenly matched. Livni does not appear to inspire great confidence, but Netanyahu carries considerable baggage and is far from universally trusted. Netanyahu will spin Livni's failure to form a coalition government as proof of her lack of political acumen; she will spin it as demonstrating her ability to stand up to "extremists" -- the religious parties.
Livni could receive a significant boost if Barack Obama wins our election next week. In that event, and assuming Obama plays his hand well, Obama will be in a good position to influence Israel's election for two reasons. First, if he plays his hand well, I expect that initially Obama would be popular in Israel. Second, Israelis nonetheless wouldl harbor uncertainty about Obama's intentions, and thus would likely bend over backwards not to alienate him.
Obama, in all likelihood, would rather deal with the inexperienced and seemingly pliable Livni than with a strident old war horse like Netanyahu. Thus, I would expect a President Obama, in one way or another, to use the strange combination of his popularity and and the dread he inspires to tilt the playing field in favor of Livni.

Barack Obama: Closing Argument
I really like this line at the end... "In one week we can choose hope over fear, and unity over division." It says a lot about what Obama has stood for all along vs. what McCain/Palin has represented so disgracefully these past few months.

All 22 countries in a BBC World Service poll would prefer Democratic nominee Barack Obama elected US president instead of his Republican rival John McCain. Obama is preferred by a four to one margin on average across the 22,000 people polled.
The margin in favour of Obama ranges from just 9% in India to 82% in Kenya. On average 49% prefer Obama to 12% preferring McCain. Nearly four in 10 do not take a position.
The poll also explored the expected impact of the US election. In 17 of the 22 countries surveyed the most common view is that, if Barack Obama is elected president, America’s relations with the rest of the world are likely to get better. If John McCain is elected, the most common view in 19 countries is that relations will stay about the same as they are now.
On average 46 percent think that US relations with the world would get better with Obama, 22 percent that relations would stay the same, and 7 percent that they would get worse. However only 20 percent think relations would get better under McCain. The largest number – 37 percent – think relations under a McCain presidency would stay the same and 16 percent think they would get worse.
The countries most optimistic that an Obama presidency would improve relations are America’s NATO allies - Canada (69%), France (62%), Germany (61%), United Kingdom (54%), Italy (64%) - as well as Australia (62%) and the African countries Kenya (87%) and Nigeria (71%).Despite the preference for an Obama victory in all countries, significant proportions in several said they do not favour either candidate, favour both equally or do not know which would be preferable. This was particularly the case in Russia, where 75 percent do not express a preference between the candidates, but also in Turkey (63%) and Egypt (61%).
When asked whether the election as US president of Barack Obama, an African-American man, would “fundamentally change” their perception of the United States, 46 percent said it would while 27 percent said that it would not.
The US public was polled separately and Americans also believe an Obama presidency would improve US relations with the world more than a McCain presidency, with 46 percent of Americans expecting relations to be improved with Obama’s election and 30 percent with McCain’s.The results are drawn from a survey of 22,531 adult citizens across 22 countries conducted for the BBC World Service by the international polling firm GlobeScan together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland. A parallel poll surveyed 1,000 US adult citizens. GlobeScan coordinated fieldwork between July 8, 2008 and August 27, 2008.
