Republican security experts rail against Trump in open letter

"He weakens US moral authority as the leader of the free world," the letter read.
"He appears to lack basic knowledge about and belief in the US Constitution, US laws, and US institutions, including religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and an independent judiciary."

"The Republican candidate has questioned whether the US should honour its commitments to Nato, endorsed the use of torture and suggested that South Korea and Japan should arm themselves with nuclear weapons."

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/electi…

Excuse my ignorance as I am not from the US but why did Trump not run as an independent? Money? Rocking the Republican boat?
Presumably he had support within the Republican party to even become a candidate?

I know how things work over here just wondering if it is the same?

    • Reps and Dems are so entrenched in the system(legislators, media, money, power) that only they can win the presidency. Independents can only be spoilers.IRNlun6
    • Bernie switched to Dem to run, then when he lost to Hillary he switched right back to independent.IRNlun6
    • < this group who has the gal to label anyone as weak in moral authority, are the same ones who brought us the wonderful war in Iraq and its consequences.IRNlun6
    • okay... but how did Trump even get nominated by Repubs in 1st place? I presume he must have needed a certain number to nominate?fadein11
    • Voters. He needed a nation wide 1237 delegates to win the nomination. They did everything they could to try and stop him but he won by an overwhelming majorityIRNlun6
    • People really want that wall.monospaced
    • Make America great again. It's got electrolytes. It's what America craves.monospaced
    • I believe anyone can run under any party as long as you file with the FEC and file to get on all state ballots.IRNlun6
    • Our delegate system is completely fucked, they can literally be bought. They have to give the appearance that they're not corrupt so they go with the voters.IRNlun6
    • This year was particularly unique in that the Republican party did not support the nominee but voters forced their hand.IRNlun6
    • Trump has done a great job positioning himself as populist nationalist which is why he secured the nomination against the entire Republican establishment.IRNlun6
    • thanks for the clarification. I kind of get why he's getting voted but presumed he must have had to been nominated by republican party to start the race -fadein11
    • but I see anyone can run which I guess is fair really as it leaves it in the public's hands... just aa shame in this case ha.fadein11

Regarding this open letter on security.... From the NY Times...

FIFTY of the nation’s most senior Republican national security officials, many of them former top aides or cabinet members for President George W. Bush, have signed a letter declaring that Donald J. Trump “lacks the character, values and experience” to be president and “would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.”

Mr. Trump, the officials warn, “would be the most reckless president in American history.”

It says he has “demonstrated repeatedly that he has little understanding” of the nation’s “vital national interests, its complex diplomatic challenges, its indispensable alliances and the democratic values” on which American policy should be based. And it laments that “Mr. Trump has shown no interest in educating himself.”

Trump's response? He blames them for terrorism. "They're the ones the American people should look to for answers on why the world is a mess, and we thank them for coming forward so everyone in the country knows who deserves the blame for making the world such a dangerous place.”

    ------

Ok, help me out here. FOX 'news' was riling everyone up about those Harvard kids answering a gotcha question, right? Remember, the one about "who is a bigger threat to global security, the US or ISIS?" Remember that?

Trump literally just said that this group of American foreign policy and national security experts deserve the blame for making the world such a dangerous place. Where is the outrage from the right-wing media? Trump tweets every couple days something about the dishonest media being biased against him, but they're clearly giving him a huge pass on this.

The people against Trump now includes a full 50 security experts that just went against their own party – risking their careers, finances, and chances of ever holding a position of power again – in order to speak out against Trump. There is no other Republican candidate, these people aren't angling for a better job, they're not trying to get a preferred candidate elected.

They're speaking out of concern for their country and global security. Trump says they're responsible for terrorism.

    • Finally, the Globalists are coming to save us. good post nb. this means TPP has a chance. good news.yurimon

They're not speaking out of concern for the country and global security. They're protecting the military industrial complex, crony capitalists and oligarchs that are control the west. The most dangerous part in supporting everyone that comes out against Trump is how the left is now supporting the neo cons.

They're the ones who lied to the American public about the threat Saddam Hussein posed in the lead up to the Iraq war. They lied about torture. Many of them got us to overthrow Gaddafi, and supporting Islamists across the region. They destroyed countries causing people to migrate to Europe and increasing the threat of terror globally.

To list some of the names, and I'm sure there's other with dubious histories, CIA and NSA Director Michael Hayden; Robert Zoellick, former deputy secretary of State and president of the World Bank; James Jeffrey, former deputy national security adviser to the White House; and former secretaries of Homeland Security Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff... just look up who these people are. They don't give two fucks about the American public.

Does anyone remember the Bush presidency anymore? Because the Dems are now on the same side, and looking at their collusion during this election probably always on the same side as many of these criminals.

    • It is so brutal that the Obama/Clinton administration is not that far off from the Bushes with regards to foreign policy.
      ********
    • It's unfortunate that the Republicans couldn't get a sane candidate nominated, to have a real debate about foreign policy.

    • His economic plan isn't helping either. It benefits the rich, and for some reason his most rabid followers don't seem to grasp that.monospaced
    • Sadly, the vast majority of people vote against their own interests (on both sides.) This is nothing new.

    • ^ is it the same type of plan that benefited the rich these past years? cause that would be awesome.yurimon

"Now I’m Canadian, which, although it certainly undermines the credibility of my observations on the Trump phenomenon in some respects, actually does have its advantages. The whole thing is curiously academic, for Canadians, watching our cousins to the south play hysterical tug-o-war with their children’s future. What’s more, even though I’m about as academically institutionalized as a human can be, I’m not an academic, and I have steadfastly resisted the tendency of the highly educated to surround themselves with people who are every bit as institutionalized—or at least smitten—by academic culture.

I belong to no tribe, at least not clearly. Because of this, I have Canadian friends who are, indeed, Trump supporters. And I’ve been whaling on them, asking questions, posing arguments, and they have been whaling back. Precisely because we are Canadian, the whole thing is theatre for us, allowing, I like to think, for a brand of honesty that rancour and defensiveness would muzzle otherwise.

When I get together with my academic friends, however, something very curious happens whenever I begin reporting these attitudes: I get interrupted. "But-but, that’s just idiotic/wrong/racist/sexist!" And that’s when I begin whaling on them, not because I don’t agree with their estimation, but because, unlike my academic confreres, I don’t hold Trump supporters responsible. I blame them, instead. Aren’t they the ‘critical thinkers’? What else did they think the ‘cretins’ would do? Magically seize upon their enlightened logic? Embrace the wisdom of those who openly call them fools?

Fact is, you’re the ones who jumped off the folk culture ship."

    Here's what's going to happen.

Drumpf is going to destroy his campaign as much as he possibly can while smearing Hillary as much as he can. At the last minute he's going to drop out and in will walk squeaky clean Paul Ryan and Senator McCain to save America. They aren't "Killary" as idiots put it, and they aren't the devil himself Drumpf. By default they'll win.

    • isnt their a time limit to put a name on a ballots in diff states?yurimon
