Republican security experts rail against Trump in open letter
"He weakens US moral authority as the leader of the free world," the letter read.
"He appears to lack basic knowledge about and belief in the US Constitution, US laws, and US institutions, including religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and an independent judiciary.""The Republican candidate has questioned whether the US should honour its commitments to Nato, endorsed the use of torture and suggested that South Korea and Japan should arm themselves with nuclear weapons."

Excuse my ignorance as I am not from the US but why did Trump not run as an independent? Money? Rocking the Republican boat?
Presumably he had support within the Republican party to even become a candidate?I know how things work over here just wondering if it is the same?
- Reps and Dems are so entrenched in the system(legislators, media, money, power) that only they can win the presidency. Independents can only be spoilers.IRNlun6
- Bernie switched to Dem to run, then when he lost to Hillary he switched right back to independent.IRNlun6
- < this group who has the gal to label anyone as weak in moral authority, are the same ones who brought us the wonderful war in Iraq and its consequences.IRNlun6
- okay... but how did Trump even get nominated by Repubs in 1st place? I presume he must have needed a certain number to nominate?fadein11
- Voters. He needed a nation wide 1237 delegates to win the nomination. They did everything they could to try and stop him but he won by an overwhelming majorityIRNlun6
- People really want that wall.monospaced
- Make America great again. It's got electrolytes. It's what America craves.monospaced
- I believe anyone can run under any party as long as you file with the FEC and file to get on all state ballots.IRNlun6
- Our delegate system is completely fucked, they can literally be bought. They have to give the appearance that they're not corrupt so they go with the voters.IRNlun6
- This year was particularly unique in that the Republican party did not support the nominee but voters forced their hand.IRNlun6
- Trump has done a great job positioning himself as populist nationalist which is why he secured the nomination against the entire Republican establishment.IRNlun6
- thanks for the clarification. I kind of get why he's getting voted but presumed he must have had to been nominated by republican party to start the race -fadein11
- but I see anyone can run which I guess is fair really as it leaves it in the public's hands... just aa shame in this case ha.fadein11
- getting votes* not voted.fadein11
- But in short, the very terrifying truth is theres a lot of Americas that support his views and his behavior. Thats why he's there. Its god awfully disappointingsofakingback
- and embarrassing.sofakingback
- yep I get that - we in the UK had a similar situation where half the country voted for a trio of c*nts on Brexit... scary days.fadein11
