seriously, these are the only drives one should consider.

I agree with the MyBook. They have been great, have 12 of them at work for various different projects.

I was researching 1TB drives on the internet and did a brisk search like "WD HD failures" or "Lacie HD failures" before actually buying. It seems like there are way more WD (myBook) failures than anything else, but I mean that's not to say Lacie is problem-free either.
I guess the other factor is that you will get less problems if you have your external HD sitting on your desk and not taking it to random places... As well, I found out if you are going to get a 'portable' external hd, research the casing....
- Of course if you have a decent backup strategy, drive failure should be an inconvenience, not a disaster.ribit

i just got a western digital my home 500 GB and its unreal i would recommend it to anyone

I've had 2 LaCie drives go down on me. I would advise against purchasing their products.
- I don't think your hard drive failure study is statistically significant.ribit

I vote Western Digital MyBook and Western Digital internal drives (like 1TB 10EACS)... Mainly cos they are quiet and cheap.

I have a WD and a Lacie... looking for another, has anyone tried/used the apple TC?

So, I really need to get one asap. I've reviewed all of these, but can't make up my mind. I need something reliable, and not too expensive.
What would YOU buy if you had to buy one right now? Thanks!

I have a mybook 500GB right now, only about 5GB left in because of time machine and all my photo crap. I had a 250GB mybook too before, but I gave it my dad, still works. Both are really reliable.
should i go with the mybook studio? same size?

How about this one? Not bad for a 1TB...

- yeah, you have to "unpower" by pull the plug. its pretty stupid.akrokdesign

first drive I had was a 250bg lacie porche, died on me (after being dropped on concrete though, tbh)
second was a firewire maxtor, has been fine despite maxtor being crap, but then again I almost never move it.
third is a wb 500gb, was for all my music and movies, but it's full so I just got a 1tb mybook for movies. It is fine so far but seems to take years to mount (because of size?) and playback from the drive stuffs up sometimes. I might need to get a faster drive with fw for better playback.. not sure if that's the problem or if my mini just sint powerful enough.
- Does it take a long time for the drive to mount or does it go to sleep and take time to spin-up?********

so far MyBook seems like the preferred ext HD of QBNers...
- akrokdesign0
by the way....
do you guys run with the ext. HD on all the time, or do you switch them of asap. ????
i usually turn them off, when i can. except the ministack which has a fan, i am not worried about that one.

We've got two of these. A bit pricey but it's a mirrored 1tera drive. If one fails, you lose no work. Our mac dealer swears by them. We've had one about a year, and the other maybe four months.

This thread is making me paranoid about my data storage set-up. What's the cheapest RAID system you guys have come across? is it worth the trouble / expense?
- ********0
Tungsten, be paranoid about data storage. Seriously, what's the dollar-value of a RAID setup versus the dollar-value of lost work if a drive taps out? A 1tera setup is about 500 bucks or so from macdoc.com in Mississauga and well worth it. We use the RAIDs as our network storage and then copy to an off-site external every few weeks (usually monthly or on project completion). Computer backup is just via time-machine to a capsule and/or external FW drives depending on the machine.
Drives fail. That's just what they do — especially if they're working all the time. It's really cheap insurance if you think about it.

i used to vouch for lacie's and teh extra $$$, but have recently had a couple 2 year old D2's die on me back to back.
having done lots of research i'm now of the opinion that multiple cheap 500GB drives is the best way to go. the 1TB drives rarely are much savings over 2x 500, and all too often its the power supplies or enclosures that fail rather than the disks... so money best spent on multiple drives. WD Mybooks are my new fav because their dirt cheap, compact, and shelf together nicely.
the seagate are also cheap and good but i hate the base/ footpad on it. also have read that their coveted 5 year warranty is BS because the claim process is torture, and when they do replace its generally another dogdey refurb drive.
- or of course build your own raid is probably the best option if you have the time and money to invest upfronthorton
- iluvsoul0
I only got LaCie's and in 6/7 years have had 1 disk arrive dead and I have one now which is on the blink. I leave it switched off and only turn it on when I need something from it. Which reminds me I need to invest!
Any experiences with the time capsule from apple?
