I like the sound of a RAID Level 1 Mirrored Drive. What is the best drive to get if wanting one of these?

Posted it in drobo thread, but it fits here even better:
Anyone using Time Capsule for storage? Seems like a perfect solution for me: n-wireless router with its own HD and USB for additional drives. GB Ethernet connection if I need faster action.
- Not RAIDed so unless you've got another strategy for b/u I'd not store anything solely on the time capsule.********

I am also wondering about the Time Capsule. My laptop is 100gb HD so I keep most of files on an external drive and have a back up for that drive too. I am trying to figure out the best way to keep my files organized and have 2 copies of all my files.
- Use backup software so you can do scheduled incremental backups, and have a version history.ribit
- You don't want 2 copies of everything, just one copy, and a backup made with a backup software (which is a single database)ribit
- database file)ribit
- or multiple files, but managed by the software (Time Machine, Retrospect, etc)ribit
- right now, i use 500g WD exHD and have another 500g WD HD to mirror the first. I use chronosync for it.tkmeister
- I am not sure that's the best way. I am also considering a remote back up just in case...tkmeister

- I mean 2TBninjasavant
- investing that much into 1 box and power supply frightens me... i'd much rather have 4x 500horton
- then you have 4 power supplies to break, and less flexibilityribit

In many cases you are better off getting the drive and enclosure separately. This way you get to choose a server grade drive over a consumer one and have longer warranty.

The old WD My Books (ring lights on front) were very problematic with OS X. Mine overheated, buggered the superdrive and shut itself down while copying. Some tech support and deleting of rogue install files later, it's fine. So far.
New ones are supposed to be much, much better.

I have the older version of the WD book. When it puts itself to sleep, it takes a while (it makes a sound, then wait 2 seconds) for it to wake back up. It annoys the shit out of me, especially when playing music.
Does this happen to the newer ones?- I can't put my macbook pro to sleep without unplugging it. it annoys me.tkmeister

only one mention of g-tech drives? they're probably one of, if not the, best out there. super solid. i'll be getting one of their g-speed drives soon: http://www.g-technology.com/prod…
- can u translate to me why exactly its good/the best?usrper

RAID or GTFO

Get a case with a fast interface, one where you get your own drives (and, as kerus said, RAID it).
Only need to upgrade the drives over time = cheaper.
Here's a nice one. Firewire 800.

exactly. raid (mirrored) HDs so if one dies your ass isn't up a creek

btw, just re-checked the one in your link.
They're basically identical, it's ridiculous. They must use the same chinese shop!
