I've never had an Audi, but friends have, and they love them. I've had VW's and Honda's before, and I never noticed that the parts for VW's were too expensive, but compared to the $0 I've had to spend on parts on my Honda (02 SI) I guess it'd seem like more. My main problems with my VW's were door locks & window motors, etc...never anything in the engine, just lots of electrical bullshit. If you're looking for endless reliability and almost nonexistent maintenance (except for oil changes and the other routine stuff), go with the Honda. VWs and Audis are a little more money to maintain, but are alot more fun to drive. This is just from my personal experience...for whatever that's worth.

yeah it's hard to beat that

mg33 - parts that (depending on how badly the car was driven) that will not be covered by the warranty : brake rotors, clutch.

All I know is everyone I personally know that has owned a honda has nevery had any problems with it long after warranty. Granted these are people that will take it in for routine maintenance and the scheduled oil changes but still I have yet to meet someone that had one of those "oh shit my car is fucking up, it gonna cost WHAT to fix it????"

Honda = reliable, economical, good resale value and in general a safer bet.
Audi = luxurious, good driving qualities but is usually more expensive (parts and labor).
VW = drives well, nice interior finish/ergonomics but known for electrical problems. That being said, I live in a Quebec and with the winters we get here, I definitely enjoy having a Honda that starts every day even at -40C.
- well, for cold days...a car thats diesel is just perfect.akrokdesign

honda all the way... if you want a auxilary input, then just go buy a new deck on www.crutchfield.com. my favorite brands for decks are pioneer, kenwood, eclipse, and alpine in that order. and the decks really improve the sound quality because they have amps in them

you can't do that to the accord. you can't replace the stero, it's all one giant thing:
it does have a button that says CD/Aux and XM Radio below it on the same button, so I wondered if there's perhaps an aux port in the back that can be wired into.
Strangely, the Audi A4 was a plus because it had a tape player! We've used a FM transmitter ipod gizmo before and the sound quality is not so great. Current car's replaced stereo has an aux cable input, but it broke.
The stereo in the honda did sound really good. Audi was best though with bose.
- I have an 07 CRV and it has an aux port in between the seats.lherb

I have an audi but I have the warranty too, so no problem there. If you are lacking the warranty go for something that won't break down on you.... like the audi.

Some local guy here did this a few years back. And I heard when he used to take it in to the shop he had the name of his site plastered all over the car.

You are looking over the sleeper in the market: Mazda3 Speed. I have a 2007 Mazda 3 Hatch. For the money, the only car Consumer Reports ranked higher (and only slightly) was the Honda Civic. But if you are looking for something sportier, the Mazda3 Speed is a GREAT deal. If you want mg33, I can send you pdf's from Consumer Reports for both the new and used cars you have mentioned. Let me know and good luck.
CR has a buying service that shops around your area for the best deal on new cars. It saved me about $600 compared to where I may have bought my car.

I drive a vw. Extremely reliable. I wouldn't trust your woman's parents when they say stay away from european cars.. maybe there's an actual reason instead of simple ignorance but sounds like bollox to me. A couple of friends drive Audi's, much more expensive to run & service generally from what they tell me. Honda schmonda, not as reliable from my experiences.

Acura TSX. I had an audi A4 because i love the looks of it. but transmission crapped out at 70k miles. unacceptable. go japanese.

well really you have 2 choices VW or Honda, because Audis feel exactly like VWs with a little more flash.
VW may be tempting but unless you or your girl can fix the little minor stuff that will start going wrong with in the first year I say think twice about the VW or Audi. They are the better looking ones but it seems like all those gadgets just end up going wrong after a while...
+ transmissions seem to be suspect to.So for people looking for a normal car that will last a life time and never let you down. go honda.
Only bad thing I can say about them is that their paint sucks, its very thin, it chips and peels very easy. Also the boby panels dent with anything so DO NOT park next to mini vans at the sueprmarket.
Also Honda holds its value.Just my opinion based off experience.

I've owned five VW's since 1985, six including one I owned with my father. The last one I bought (a 2000 Jetta) was abysmal (I've already ranted on and on about it in another forum). And I dont think the problem was just with my car, my friend with the same year Beetle had to get rid of hers for similar reasons. JD power and associates ranks them well below average in quality and consumer reports identifies many of the models as cars to stay away from.
Yet for some reason I still like to drive them. The feel, the way they handle, the driving position, are very different from Honda's. I always feel like I'm sitting down inside of a Honda which feels odd to me. Anyway, I will say that I think VWs are not cars to own on a long term basis. The engines go forever but everything around them seem to fall apart. Leasing isn't the best approach for most people, but if it benefits you (as a tax write-off, for example), it's the best way to have a VW.
Here's a JD Powers ranking chart:

I have Jetta myself, anything made of plastic in or on the car has already fell apart.
BTW - VW and Audi are made my the same company

All the cars I've driven up to my current Audi A3 have been Hondas or Acuras, from a '79 Civic hatchback to a '94 Integra. You can't go wrong with them. So reliable. Mileage is good. Ergonomics are right on.
That said, I decided to test the waters back in February and upgrade to this Audi, and I love it. The ride and the way it drives are really nice, and the fit and finish of the interior are tops. It certainly looks and feels more solid and higher quaity than my previous Hondas/Acura.

It seems like the positive VW/Audi opinions are recent owners, many still in warranty and having basic maintenance covered. But will the used warranty on the Audi cover maintenance? I doubt it if it's not factory warranty. And even common things like brake jobs are like triple the cost of domestics or Japanese imports.
Like BMWs, Audis are better lease than purchase vehicles, IMO. Fun to drive, generally well built, but maintenance can nickel and dime you to death.
- In Europe, is it not the opinion that Audi's are for Germans and salesmen only? lolETM
