I've owned five VW's since 1985, six including one I owned with my father. The last one I bought (a 2000 Jetta) was abysmal (I've already ranted on and on about it in another forum). And I dont think the problem was just with my car, my friend with the same year Beetle had to get rid of hers for similar reasons. JD power and associates ranks them well below average in quality and consumer reports identifies many of the models as cars to stay away from.
Yet for some reason I still like to drive them. The feel, the way they handle, the driving position, are very different from Honda's. I always feel like I'm sitting down inside of a Honda which feels odd to me. Anyway, I will say that I think VWs are not cars to own on a long term basis. The engines go forever but everything around them seem to fall apart. Leasing isn't the best approach for most people, but if it benefits you (as a tax write-off, for example), it's the best way to have a VW.
