What are some pros & cons? The price of the 1.4 is more less in my pice range right now but should I wait a while and get the 1.2 instead?
I currently own a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Zoom Lens and am looking for another lens to compliment it. Are there any others besides the 50mm I should be looking at instead. Thanks.

85mm 1.8
the 50mm 1.2 is cool but i heard people complaining of focus shifting. Get the 50mm 1.4 awesome lens for the price.
- focus shifting? Does that mean there distortion?
imnotadesigner - Focusing is not stable. Even when focus is locked it'll front focus or back focus for some reason.ok_not_ok
- your hand shaking is probably enough to shift focus at 1.2rafalski
- Come to think of it, I've used an 85mm lens http://www.flickr.co…imnotadesigner

I wouldn't bother with the 1.2. Get the Sigma 30mm 1.4 instead ;)
- Are Sigmas good lenses? I've heard they weren't that great?imnotadesigner
- Very untrue. Some are crap, some are amazing. Just like Canons.kult
- so the 30mm is good? Do you have any sample photos?imnotadesigner
- I would buy Canon if you can afford itjoqui
- stay on-brand.sherm
- the new sigma 50mm 1.4 has received great reviews. might wanna check it out.Chief

50/1.4 and 85/1.8, they cost less than the 50/1.2
If you need the 1.2 later on, you'll know it and the 50/1.4 will keep its resell value.- what camera is it for btw?rafalski
- true... Canon 5D by the wayimnotadesigner

i have the 1.4 which is a great lens for the price, but i rented the 1.2 a while ago and it's amazing.

Get the 50/1.4, go out and shoot. You're missing out not having any of these, no point in waiting for the perfect lens while photo opportunities pass by.

whats the difference between 1.4 and 1.2? is that fstop? Whats that mean thank u
- redant0
Also speaking of cameras what do u guys think of the 10-22mm lens for architecture / building photography? I am wanting to get the 40d soon
- pls helpredant
- 10-22 is an awesome landscape lens for crop canon's (20d, 30d, rebel) but if u have a 5D go for the 16-35Lok_not_ok
- That's a good setup.Mimio
- The 10-22 is great for architecture -- but vertical lines will be greatly distorted!tonyfetters
- yea true im on a budget and im getting a 40dredant
- 10-22 for crop factor cameras, 16-35 for full frame.sherm

If you are doing architecture photography, get a tilt-shift lens to counter parallax. it helps with distortion.

Just get the 1.4 its brilliant for the price... cant really fault it.. its got enough DOF for me thanks..
The 10-22mm is good, although strangely im a massive fan of wide angle lenses but i sometimes find this lens a little too wide! Its good when people are around in the edges of your shot as they get really distorted...
- cool what other wide angle options are there?
redant - Canon EF 16-35 and EF-S 17-55, both at f2.8. About $1400 and $1100 respectively.nearestexit

the 50mm 1.2 L is the bomb! You can get some crazy DOF with a short focal length ... great damn lens. The 50 1.4 is also really solid lens. Very sharp and for the price you can not beat it. Also, something you may want to look into is the 35 1.4 L glass. Wide angle and a fast prime lens. Photography is about your glass, I would recommend getting the L if you can. Wait it out, so worth it, trust me.

Im going to rent the 50mm 1.4 shoot for a day or so then Ill rent the 30mm sigma and see how that holds up before I buy anything... But Im leaning towards the 50mm 1.4 just because of the price. Hopefully if it makes me some money I can buy the 1.2 down the road

maybe it's in the thread and i didn't pick it up, but which camera body do you have? if it doesn't have a full frame sensor, you might want to go with the 35mm 1.4 (i have an xti and i went with this option instead because of the 1.6 sensor factor... which basically makes it a 50mm). btw, i have the 24-70 and it's an amazing lens, but i've been using the 35 a lot more since i bought it...

He is shooting with the 5D, so his has full frame.
Telling you Imnotadesigner rent the 50mm 1.4 one weekend and rent the 50 1.2 L the next. Your answer will be there.

1.2 is really heavy and is not really for sports, slow focusing at that kind of DOF. 1.4 is a good bet though.
- sikma0
The 1.2 is a "L Series Lens" which is Canon's pro lens line. The 1.4 is just a standard lens. L series lens have higher optical quality but unless your making big prints or are VERY technically driven I HIGHLY doubt you will be seeing a huge difference between the two.
- this is very very true. Playing with the lenses will show this as well. Great advicezod

I like both - but for me, I've decided to get the 35mm 1.2 L for myself for my 40D since I have a crop-frame camera.
Which is about a 50mm 1.2 on a full frame.and the 10-22mm is not a good lens for architecture unless you intend to be really far away. There is a ton of barrel distortion in it along the sides.
Great for extreme wide landscape shots, though!

Hey, is Canon ever going to update the 5D? Or is it still worth getting today? I'm ready to get a digital SLR and want something with a full-frame sensor which means either the 5D or the EOS-1Ds Mark III (which no way I'm buying).
I guess I could also go the cheap route and get the new Rebel XSi and just get new lenses to accommodate the 1.6 FLM.
Any recommendations?
- slappy0
I'm thinking about this too, I might just grab the 5D while its cheap, still a great camera and at its current price a real bargain.
As for the 50mm debate, why buy a 50mm at all unless you specifically need one. I need one at the moment because I'm shooting in close proximity with a flash in very dark venues shooting waist up portraits on FF bodies. It's ideal for this. I know a lot of people buy 50s but they also rarely use them.
If you want a portrait lens the 85mm f1.8 would be a better option or even a 70-200 f4L. You willl get a more flattering perspective and better bokeh at longer focal ranges.
