Ok. I know I am going to be slated by web usability and user experience experts when I suggest this but why not suggest on all my sites that the user use a certain Browser.
We all harp on about user-centric design and cross browser compatibility but at some point we gotta turn that responsibility on the end user.As web designers should it not be our job to point out and suggest that certain internet browsing software offers the end user a better window for viewing the internet? Why not suggest on all our sites that Firefox is a superior internet browser. Im browned off compromising my CSS for internet explorer and I now think we should all push the resposibility to the user. One Click to a FREE download for a better Web experience... If I went to see a movie in a shit movie theatre and the same movie was on my block in a state of the art high definition cinema for free... I'd be pissed if someone didn't advice me of the latter... time to advise....

Best if viewed in Internet Explorer 5.0 at 800x600

You're "browned off?" That sounds really damn gross.

If you know what you're doing you should be good with any of the latest major browsers. FFox 2-3, Safari, or IE 7.

Make all your websites start with a splash page then, with a BIG FUCK OFF get firefox button on the page.
possibly a few 1 px diagonal lines too.

Im not even suggesting a " BEST VIEW" tag on the website. That just sounds lazy. Lets tell the truth. That latest browser IE 7, SAFARI, FIREFOX... SHOULD BE DOWNLOADED... let the user UPGRADE... its simple and free... BUT they need to know this.... the majority are not aware of this
- Jeermid0
Im coding CSS to roll back to IE 5.. bullshit ... DOWNLOAD LATEST BROWSER or read a newspaper instead :)
- ********0
so, how are you planning to tell people then?
- Fariska0
are you forgetting that people HATE to be told what to do, Especially on the internet?
- Jeermid0
Ever site I design will have a clear message to the user that they SHOULD use a current browser to view the internet and I will provide a link to an external page suggest latest browser software and the benefits of using one of them... INFORM.... then its up to the user..

You do realize that )depending on your target) audience the vast majority of people on the internet are using IE 6 or 7. If you take the approach you are suggesting, you should at least design for the dominant browser.
- i'm browned off CSS entirely.. back to tables for me7point34

some people can't install apps on their work computer... not their fault, just fucked up by the system
- Jeermid0
Exactly... people are still using IE 6... whay not inform everyone a FREE download is the missing link to a better overall internet user experience ... whether its IE 7, FIREFOX, SAFARI, whtever.... just the LATEST....
- could you offer a trade? ffffound invites perhaps? may sweeten the deal.7point34

lets stop assuming that users even know the difference , If I go to a website the shit better work with what I got there with is the mentality we are up against , most user will freak out when you say hey download this and install it and come back , no way will they do that.
- bet theres people who dont even know what a browser is. theyd think that blue e is the internet.October

Why don't they do it? Because these are businesses and if you start making people put in more effort to access your site, your hits will plummet. Better to put the onus on the developers:D

i will try and "advise" then...
"As web designers should it not be our job to point out and suggest that certain internet browsing software offers the end user a better window for viewing the internet?"that statement, in and of itself, *is* "..Deny(ing) The web user best web experience"
- Yes it was a question MADIRISH... not a statement... exploring concepts here on this thread not looking for faultJeermid

Well, for one thing (as someone else pointed out) on my test PC at work I can not add or upgrade software - which is common and more people surf at work than they do at home.
So if you force an upgrade or install you are writing off, um... , let's say 60% of your potential visitors.
Think of it this way - you have a store with a parking garage and due to a design flaw there is a big 10" step instead of a ramp and the only vehicles that can make it into the garage are big ass trucks. Everyone with a car has to either buy a big ass truck or go shop somewhere else.
What do you think they are going to do?
- this is assuming you are designing for the "average" web user and not a niche audienceflashbender
- depends on if there is an offer for a free big ass truck next to the garage.simple_space
- Exactly... what if there was an offer for a big ass truck... Why not inform the user of something better. If its a restaurant a movie theatre a nice view a web browser

In my job I have to support back level browsers because some of our big clients (US Govt for example) have strict rules about upgrading and it takes them forever to get up to speed from a year ago. So instead of losing them as a client we acquiesce and do our best to accommodate them. Consider though that good usability is not driven by technology, the concepts remain the same.

Some schools still only allow IE 6 (because they haven't upgraded their software) and this makes upgrading difficult for some people.

I guess it depends. If I'm on an entertainment site perhaps I'd be open to recommendations. If I'm trying to get something done or find information then I don't want to be schooled or download anything to have a better experience...just get me where I need to go. If I need a special browser to do that then you've failed me.
- Latest browsers offer so much more flexibility to improve usability.Jeermid
