Hot and cold media
For McLuhan there are two different kinds of media: hot and cold media.
The hot media are those, which have a large influence on humans and its sensous perception. According to McLuhan these media even possess a "destructive strength" . The pioneer of the media ranks the writing, the phon-etic alphabet, the book, the photography and also the radio among this kind of medium. These ob-jects of communication place much data and de-tailed informations at the users disposal, which are mainly concentrate on one sense of the recipient.
It is affected by this, but remains rather passive in the behavior. The cold media have a small influence strength on humans. The reason for this is, that they offer little details and information, and are not optically delightful for humans. To use and understand these media humans must actively deal with these media. McLuhan calls the televi-sion, the telephone or the caricature as example for it. Finally we mention the fact that a medium is not only hot or cold, but must be regarded always standing in a relationship to another medium.

This guy I know who is probably around 75, called me a few months ago (I can't remember exactly, but probably no more than 3 months ago) he said, listen, I have to show you my new phone, once you see this, you are going to want this, I'm sure.. I know its expensive but its worth the money...
So a few days later we meet for lunch and there he is, with his new iPhone.. you know what what the thing that was talking about?
"if you take a picture of someone, you can save it on your phone, so next time that person calls you, his photo will show up on the screen"
You will get puched if you actually "timeline" someone in real life, so out of respect, I did NOT showed him, that my 6 year old nokia phone does the same thing, and it was given to me for free by me phone provider.
That was new to him.

*newish* media
- Meeklo0
Its not how it works, because there are people up there calling themselves "new media designers" and all the do is business card shaped cd roms in director.
But then you have those "new media designers" designing interfaces for reactables / multi touch screens, interactive installations/ ads with processing that respond to audio visual imput, etc.
Those to me are today's new media designers. If you are not up to date and you think doing a POS on director is new media, then I'm sorry, your definition of the word "new" is as outdated as the guy doing the cd rom cards. as simple as that.

Imagine is it was still new coke. hahah..ha....ehhhhh.....

So while this makes sense:
"You can't keep calling new to something that's been done for a long period of time."
That's not how it works.
- Jaline0
Yes, but that's not how theory works. Although "new" does come after "old", usually, a lot of things have a title with the word "new" or "post" in them, but the concepts and technologies contained within are not necessarily new in terms of time.
- "New media" could just be a period of time, just Modernism.Jaline
- Meeklo0
well, to put it this way..
a pair of shoes is only "new" the first time you put them on..
after you used, they are just shoes..new, means just that. new.
you can't keep calling new to something that's been done for a long period of time.. at least that's how I see it.are you thinking that the term (new) itself can't be called new anymore and you think the word will be replaced by something else?
I'm not following..
- Jaline0
Hmm...it's kind of like post-(insert theory here, ie. feminism, structuralism, modernism, etc.), though. It won't go on forever. Once there's some kind of change or evolution (according to theorists), a new term will mark the period during and after that evolution. Just because it is entitled, "new", doesn't mean that it is "new" or "current" (although it usually does include "new" thoughts). Perhaps the term "new media" will only refer to all things digital, interactive, Internet, etc., but who knows what will happen in the future.
- Meeklo0
I think new media is a term that is changing.. 8 years ago it was interactive CDs, 7 years ago, it was flash websites, 6 years ago it was motion graphics, today, maybe interactive/ reactive environments, responsive installations, etc. 5 years from now, its going to be something else.. new media will always be "new medium of communication"
if you say you do "new media" and you are doing "business cards cd roms, then its you the one that needs to change you title, as technology keeps evolving, so will the the meaning of "new"
- jevad0
I just think the term is a cliche
- studderine0
