Shia LaBeouf.
With CGI monkeys.
Swinging from vines in the jungle canopy.

Wifey and I had a blast. Yes the monkey scene was dumb, and there were a few moments of eye rolling and over the top self referencing on Speilberg's/Lucas' part, but I really enjoyed it. I can't imagine how you could do one of these films 20 years later any better than this.
I loved the transfer of Indy from the thirties blasting into the Atomic Age of the 50's, by a goddamn atomic explosion no less. What I would say to those who were really weirded out by the aliens in the film, is that you have to do it that way in a sense. The 50's were all about paranoia, and the Reds, and saucer men. Another Ark-like macguffin may not work so well. But they tied it into Indy's world really well. The stories about the Nazca Lines, and the possible relationship between civilizations in Peru and aliens have been around forever.
Completely understandable how many will hate it. I can only imagine how atrocious it could have been if Lucas was writing the script and/or directing. I still want more Indy.

I'm with Ukit. It boggles my mind that this movie didn't get more horrible reviews. Cate Blanchet was the only thing good in the movie. The vine swinging was the worst part. I blame George Lucas.

Ok, the following is all imo obviously.
Speaking objectively and I am a Indiana Jones fan so that's kind of hard...
The first half of this film is terrific. Great set pieces, live action stunt work, decent characterisation and for a while you're glad Indie is back on the big screen. Ford still looks good and plays the role in a way which reminds you why he's still a class actor. Even Shia LeBouef doesn't really disgrace himself when he appears. Indie and Mutts first real scene together in the cafe is delightful with some genuine wit and good get-out clause. And the ensuing motorbike/car chase sequence is the best thing in the film. When the action transposes to Peru then the film starts to unravel. The Indie films have always been a homage to those fifties Saturday morning adventure programs that would always end on cliff hangar and you have to forgive them some of their failings. But the whole jungle car chase sequence is a step too far. For starters when the impressive deforestation machine that's clearing a path for the explorers is destroyed by Indie we're able to have a full on chase through the jungle on what looks like a 2 lane highway. Suspension of disbelief is one thing but assuming the audience are idiots is another. The film is almost a lesson in moviemaking - act I is how to make movies with decent actors, direction, characterisation and live action set pieces, act II is how to screw them up with hokey throw away comedy, poor cgi and ludicrous unsurvivable stunts. Finally the biggest problem is the incomprehensible plot. As a teenager I understood all three previous films, as an intelligent adult I was baffled by the end of this one.
I don't the franchise is dead and there was certainly a clear indication that the mantle might be passed on in the last scene but please, please, please Mr Spielberg (I'm guessing your responsible for the first half and let Lucas take the reins for the second half) tell George to piss off next time, stick to your promise of only using celluloid for the rest of your career and make sure the script and plot stands up to at least the same scutiny of the first three.

wtf?
:(
childhood == destroyed
:(
entertainment value = 2 / 37
:(
this was as bad as Indy II.
... just... bad.
:(
and there hopefully won't be an Indy 5... but this one...
... *sigh... just no good. :(
Some parts... fun... but the majority... :(

What was bad about Indy II exactly? I am about to watch it again this week and remember it as being a lot of fun. Was the karate kiddo sidekick too much? I just saw "Raiders" again and am doing a full series refresh before going to see the Skull.
"Raiders" defies logic or probability every minute and the story is so silly at times it hurts. It's brilliantly filmed though and you just don't care about all this being unrealistic when you're a kid. I laughed at the plot when I watched it now though, let's say it added to the fun of watching it.
I was surprised to see Alfred Molina in "Raiders", didn't realize he was in it!

To everyone MOANING about the jungle chase scene - incredulity is and has always been a part of the Indiana Jones saga - because , you know, that part in Temple when they jump off the plane into the raft is SO believable...
You must forget all that you know to be possible and realise that it is A MOVIE...
ffs
- although i liked reading jersey's reasoned look at the film, i'll have to back Jevad on this one...the dude is right.exador1
- but you cant lose yourself in the movie because of the bad CGImtgentry
- jevad, if its "just a movie" then why are you "moaning" off everyone's opinion?e-pill

Jevad, I agree with you wholeheartedly about the incredulity being an essential part of the saga. But sometimes they push it too far. I don't believe they would have survived the raft moment from temple of doom (itself the second worst of the movies after this one). Yet the way the surviving Knights Templar scene was handled in the Last Crusade was touchingly believable because by then we wanted to. I felt no emotion with the jungle sequence in the Crystal Skulls because it was so shoddily put together. You only have to look at the first half of the film to see how the good stuff works.

who else saw it?

I will see it..
maybe shia le douche is only in a few scenes..

Side note - the motorcycle chase scene was shot around where I live. They drive by the street where the movie theater is at one point. Everyone in the theater cheered and clapped after that. :)
