Wifey and I had a blast. Yes the monkey scene was dumb, and there were a few moments of eye rolling and over the top self referencing on Speilberg's/Lucas' part, but I really enjoyed it. I can't imagine how you could do one of these films 20 years later any better than this.
I loved the transfer of Indy from the thirties blasting into the Atomic Age of the 50's, by a goddamn atomic explosion no less. What I would say to those who were really weirded out by the aliens in the film, is that you have to do it that way in a sense. The 50's were all about paranoia, and the Reds, and saucer men. Another Ark-like macguffin may not work so well. But they tied it into Indy's world really well. The stories about the Nazca Lines, and the possible relationship between civilizations in Peru and aliens have been around forever.
Completely understandable how many will hate it. I can only imagine how atrocious it could have been if Lucas was writing the script and/or directing. I still want more Indy.
